Berg finished 4-1 in the 0-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Berg defeated Jeff Wright (Chicago, IL) 8-4, then won 7-3 against Jon Johnson (Fairbanks, AK) and 8-2 against Brett Davis (Denver, CO). Berg went on to lose 9-2 against Leichter. Berg responded with a 6-4 win over Bob Leclair (Tempe, AZ) in their final qualifying round match.
