Shuster finished 5-0 in the 24-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Shuster defeated Bob Leclair (Tempe, AZ) 7-1, then won 9-6 against Darryl Sobering (Denver, CO) and 6-0 against Steve Laycock (Swift Current, SK).
