Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg, MB) lost 6-3 to Kevin Koe (Calgary, AB) in the Final of the Astec Safety Challenge, held January 11 - 14, 2024 at the Lloydminster Curling Club in Lloydminster, Canada. To advance to the championship game, Carruthers won 5-4 over Joel Retornaz (Trentino, ITA) in the semifinals of the 2024 Astec Safety Challenge in Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada; and won 5-4 over Brad Gushue (St. John's, NL) in the quarterfinals. of the 2024 Astec Safety Challenge in Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada;
Carruthers finished 4-1 in the 21-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Carruthers defeated Brent Pierce (New Westminster, BC) 8-6, then went on to lose 8-5 against Bruce Mouat (STIRLING, SCO). Carruthers responded with a 4-3 win over Wouter Gosgens (Zoetermeer, NED). Carruthers won 8-7 against Pierce, then won 6-5 against Aaron Sluchinski (Airdrie, AB) in their final qualifying round match.
With their runner-up finish at the Astec Safety Challenge, Carruthers take home 38.500 world rankings points along with the $18,000CDN prize. Carruthers move up 3 spots after posting a net gain of 35.5 points improving upon their best 7 results so far this season, ranking 10th overall with 226.313 total points on the World Ranking Standings.
