In their opening game, Tanaka defeated Matthew McCrady (New Westminster, BC) 7-2, then went on to lose 9-4 against John Shoesmith (Seattle, USA). Tanaka responded with a 7-5 win over Darryl Horsman (Tempe, USA). Tanaka went on to lose 8-2 against Bob Smallwood (Whitehorse, YK) in their final qualifying round match.

Tanaka earned 0.638 world rankings points for their preliminary round wins, moving up 83 spots the World Ranking Standings into 402nd place overall with 0.802 total points. Tanaka ranks 83rd overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 0.638 points earned so far this season.
