Brier 2018

Just had to start a thread for the Brier. It starts on Friday and not much has even been said.

But then again, I don't have much to say either - just wanted to see a thread started.

Go Manitoba!

only 2 of those really count as new blood. if you're putting mcewen and gushue in there you'd have to include epping

Only Gunnlaugson OR McEwan will make the Brier...they have to play off against each other for the CTRS position.

Think the Brier play-in game will be closer than most think:

Gunnlaugson, L'Enfant terrible of Canadian mens curling has nearly completed his tedious process into manhood and responsibility. Once the skip of Reid Carruthers - he's shed most of the wild and crazy - some idiotic on-ice decisions and failures and now ready to do what fathers and sons rarely do - rep Manitoba in Briers (even as a wildcard)

McEwen could be coming off the chicken pox a bit weaker and uncoordinated. That should even things a tad. Love seeing the all-Manitoba play-in - - - - two Manitoba teams playing for the Brier - - - couple weeks ago 3 Manitoba teams playing for the Scotties .... WHOOOO!!!

Gushue (aka King Goo) is gonna be one tough, miserable hombre to knock off his throne.

Carruthers, McEwen & the Sioux City Terror Squad (Jacobs) should be the main ones standing in King Goo's way.

Outsiders include Epping & Botcher.

He's not eligible. Top 2 teams on CTRS not already qualified play. In the Scotties post it was suggested to allow Koe and Homan to be the wild card for NEXT year as the were ineligible this year...... if their teams stay together.

Mr. McEwen admitted on CJOB radio (Winnipeg) today that he still has several post-chickenpox challenges, including liver & other symptoms. Says his energy for curling is high though (wouldn't expect otherwise) but I would personally recommend the team go into their Play-In match with Gunner tonite with Billy Joel (B.J.) Neufeld tossing 4th stones.
Let Mike call the game and toss 3rd rocks.

Doubt this will happen - Mike will convince his teammates he's FINE.

If he can somehow conjure up an 88 to 94% game and push past Gunnlauson I'll be a believer!

My guess is that he's under 80% - and the game goes down to last bricks, possibly extra end.

Rules are Rules are Rules!

With all due respect to ott-am I believe the Team Canada designations are for the winners of the prior year events (STOH, Brier)

If you miss a year because of other obligations (Olympic Games) so be it - - - -

Not such a big deal. Rachel having to compete in The Fawn Shop (Ontario) for a Scotties berth isn't that tough a task. If she can't get thru a bunch of newly formed teams she should quit the game. Plus, it gives the Ontario Scotties a bit more oomph at the ticket office - having a 3 time STOH champion who also captured a world championship...

Pretty much same for Koe if they're still in play next season - - - - can't see any reasons why not. They're already heavy favorites in Alberta - with Brendan Bottcher their main competition. Good test for Bottcher who's a real up and rising curling star.

I don't want existing event winners to be displaced. However, I'd personally be willing to look at an alternative where both Team Canada's are allowed to participate. . . . . . at the expense of the lowest-ranked province, territory or wild-card.

Above yes but deemed ineligible by Curling Canada. The team that wins the trials is ineligible to compete provincially and no longer eligible to compete at the Scotties or Brier. At all.

That's why let them be the wild card next year because it's not their fault they weren't allowed to compete.

Team McEwen

There is no team in curling that deserves a win like this more than team McEwen. After losing so many finals in the Manitoba playdowns, and so many finals on the WCT tour they have paid their dues and then some.

Yes it is hard on Team Gunner as they didn't deserve to lose. That's the nature of sport though, only one can survive. Something Team McEwen knows better than most.

Can someone explain how McEwen stole one in the EE for those of us who did not have TV access?
Also, need to give Manitoba Legend some credit for calling this one...

Percentages were incredibly high. Gunner wins even though he loses - plays a tough game on national TV and almost topples a monster.

Big difference:

Gunner had two low percentage curlers in the lead and Gunner himself (74%)

McEwen actually pulled thru with an incredible 93% game - never even scored a deuce - had to steal in the extra.

B.J. was the only weakness but torqued it up in the extra!

If McEwen is semi-healthy this team should make playoffs - can't see them out-smarting or out rock-positioning Gushue (for one) but they can hang with everyone else! GREAT ADD TO THE FIELD - - - !!!

You are smart enough to know that percentages do not mean a lot. It is the right show at the right time. You could be at 50% and make the last brick for a win......

They ma y help curlers when scouting the other team better shots, but really mean nothing in a game.

The right shot at the right time!

Ee
Too many rocks in play

3 m in 4 foot and 1 g on pot

Jason’s first he tried drawing another into 4 but during delivery felt it start to pick and fired it hard - a rocker

Mike played raise to lie 4 in 4 ft

Jason cud noise hit to win or draw pot
Was a bit wide and back button weight - lost by a couple of inches

Ninth end last Jason was heavy on takeout and instead of touchy shot for 3 was forced to 1

Probably a better chance for win in ee if he had tried hit and stick methinks

Actually, his weight was good enough to score - and thus win. I freeze-framed it when the rock stopped, and if they would have taken 6 inches less ice - or if the rock had curled 6 inches more - they would have won, as the weight would have caught a good part of the button.

As usual in the animal kingdom, the superior team just had to patiently wait for the weaker team to implode. Gunner did that in the 9th and 10th end.
While Homan for the most part (Olympics excepted) learned she cannot only have the hit shot in her arsenal, Gunner is still a one hit wonder.
