What will Kaitlyn Lawes do when Jones retires?

This is one thing I will be interested to follow as she is still quite young, and might want to be a skip again. Jones's retirement probably isnt super far off, it might well be after 2018, at the latest though after 2022. I predict it would be either after 2018 or 2022 simply since for the most part the curlers seem to time their retirements around the Olympics today, or retire when they dont make Trials, etc...

I think quite likely Jill Officer would retire whenever Jones does, so that would pretty much nix the chances of staying with the team sans Jones. I could see her skipping her own team again, and going to whichever province the best chance becomes available, although I dont know as much about her work situation as some others here might. What do you think?

I think Jones decision to retire and Lawes decision to return to skipping aren't necessarily linked anymore.

Jones really fizzled out at the Manitoba Scotties - after being the dominant cash team on tour - so that's more on Jones who really went sour on dicey ice conditions. You'd think the legendary lady would figure things out better than the other mopes and fawns competing - but it didn't happen. Couldn't even get herself into the golden game vs. Englot - as she died on the vine before that.

So with enough points to auto-qualify for the Ottawa Olympic trials I believe Jones will re-focus her 2018 season on less events leading up to the Trials - leaving room to mount another challenge for the Manitoba Scotties - an event that will NOT feature the indomitable Michelle Englot - as she evidently receives a STOH auto-berth.

Listen if Jones plotzes out 5-4 (or worse) at Trials and can't stand up to top skips like Homan, Sweeting, Englot & Carey the writing will be on the wall.

If they win a Manitoba zone and get into the MB Scotties - anything short of a win will be FAILURE.

At that point - if Jones wants to keep plotzing on cuz that's what she does - she's earned the right. It just might not be with Kaitlyn Lawes in the saddle at 3rd. Kaitlyn has earned the right to make her own soup 'n salad - so it wouldn't surprise me if she pulls up stakes before Jones.

And yeah, Officer is pretty much done, every 3rd or 4th delivery is pretty much an adventure in stability now - she's the same age as JJ and while still a top 2nd (she hasn't deteriorated as much ss JJ) she may not want to serve with anyone other than Jones.

If Jones continues with a new 3rd then Officer & Dawn might play it year by year.

The other wild card is whether Jones' curlers are contractually bound to her - or not. If Lawes plays on = even if JJ falls on her face at next years trials and Manitoba Scotties it would indicate she (and the front end) are indeed under contract.

Great, great legendary team - If Jones was still producing percentages and shots from 4 to 8 years ago - she'd probably be the only team capable of confronting The Mean Girls (Homan) - I think Englot might still be a factor for the 2018-19 cycle.

You certainly raise a good point that Lawes could decide to leave Jones and go back to skipping on her own. I personally just dont see it though. I do see her staying with Jones until she retires. Just a feeling I have.

depends for me on who she picks up or if she will. i cant imagine kaitlyn wont continue on. she's still young

question is where she will curl out of

if she stays in manitoba there are plenty of options for her. someone like her im sure teams will jump at the chance to work with.

she could maybe link up with the birchard rink. manitoba's best young team by far right now

The team could be under contract until after the trials and depending on what happens, could be able to make decisions based on the trials result.

Dawn too could decide to move on, a talented front end player like her would be in demand. Kaitlyn might do well with a skip who lets her call the line at Vice or she might venture into skipping her own team.

We shall see, but guaranteed there will be lots of movement in January 2018!

agreed, but question is does she want to skip, does she feel the need to skip again, or would she be happy to settle into being a 3rd again with the right team (I cant imagine her accepting being a front end player on any team at this point, not a chance).

At least some people don't realize just how much of a fire engine Lawes is.

ML, you are selling Englot short, she did make the TOH Final remember.

It is hard to speculate but like the opening post (and others) have said, points matter. Keeping three of a team together keeps the points together. Reconfiguring with a fresh slate (fall 2018) makes sense, otherwise it gets to be team politics. What is the rule about "taking points with you" if your team splits up? Players like Morris, Simmons, CathyO, have moved around a lot. Do they have "points" that they can offer, in addition to their ability?

I think Krista McCarville should take a page out of fellow Northerner Brad Jacobs play book. Move her talented third (Lilly/EJ), with strong sweeping skills, down to second and greatly improve the front end.

Pick up a Lawes to be her Ryan Fry.

After the Trials of course.

An interesting idea - except Fry is a vastly superior 3rd to EJ. Kaitlyn only marginally better than the now coming on strong Kendra Lilly. Agreed, McCarville would be a monster with that lineup - but Kendra doesn't deserve to be moved down!

Lawes might pick up stakes with her fellow munchkins on the Rocque squad.

I've never sold Kaitlyn Lawes short. She's the complete deal - with personality to boot.

As for Englot - the two biggest stories in Canadian Curling this year were

1. Rachel Homan bringing the pride (gold) back to Canadian women's curling and

2. The Redemption story of Michelle Englot - who came within 1/2 inch of toppling the great Homan squad. . . . . and for her efforts now becomes Team Canada at next year's STOH - a Scotties which will be devoid of Team Homan - as they prepare for the Olympics!

CODICIL: Team Homan still has the right to be Team CANADA at STOH. Just not a great idea preparation wise. If anyone could do it - its her team!

The thing people seem to forget is that all teams are going to look quite different after next season, let alone after 2022. How many of the current top women's teams do you see sticking together in full after the Olympic cycle? Homan and who?

No indication anywhere that Rocque, Fleury, Tippen, Englot, Lawton, Schiedegger, Middaugh, Birchard, McCarville, etc. are parting ways.

I'd put Marla Mallett on the list but unfortunately Marla was utterly non-competitive. She's fully capable of repeating in BC - which speaks more to the quality of women's curling in that province!

At this time next year, I'll be shocked if any of these teams are the same as they are now.

Note that at the Perth Mssters Tracey Fleury doesn't have either Tall Sister or Crystal Webster playing 3rd.

She's got none other than Andrea Crawford.

Guess the 2 regulars couldn't make it - and Crawford, an ex-pt lives and works in Europe so the call was made.

Wasn't Angry Andrea playing for Germany's Angry Andrea (Schopp)?

Your not going to see much movement in January when the season is almost over. players will move after the season
