Victoria Curling Classic

This event has the most international teams that I have seen for a WCT event ever. And it once again helps to explain why Canada no longer is a lock to get to a final at a world championship or Olympic event.

Scotland - 1
Sweden - 2
Finland - 1
Norway - 1
USA - 1
Russia - 1
Japan - 2
Switzerland - 1

AB - 4
BC - 2
SK - 2
MB - 3
ON - 2
NL - 1

10 International Rinks, 14 Canadian

And I believe this helps to show why BC is not producing the same quality of teams when you have more or the same amount of teams from out of province to compete in an event.

Ouch, US Champ Brady clark was distriyed by Gushue 11-2 in his first match.
Yes, it is only one game, but I think he US needs to be worried about their Olympic qualifying chances.

Sorry, I don't quite understand what you are saying here. You think this WCT event should have at least half of the teams from BC?

No but if BC was represented by at least 4 or 5 rinks, then that just increases the exposure of high level curling to more teams preparing them to compete at a top level when it comes to the Brier, Juniors, Scotties etc. Outside of Cotter(Participating) or Pierce(Missing) there does not seem to be the elite level teams coming out of BC and I believe this is the reason why.

Not necessarily true. There are a few obstacles to competing in this event. BC has a history of having teams not stay together for too long. The time of year makes this a hard sell for BC teams. It's also in Victoria, which makes it quite a bit of travel for some teams.

There are also no BC teams outside of Cotter who are competing for an Olympic spot, and this spiel is FILLED with teams who need points or are going to the worlds. BC doesn't have a lot of those level teams, but nor do many of the provinces.

The spiel filled up VERY early this year, with teams from overseas who came over to get a spiel in before Worlds. Next year, you will definitely not see the Brewsters and Erikssons and Edins of the world in it. Last year, they were scrambling for teams.

Fair enough comments about the international presence and makes a ton of sense considering the worlds. However the "quite a bit of travel for some teams" is a little harder to understand as an explanation. Every team outside of Cotter and Dangerfield had to travel even farther (and yes I understand that the majority have sponsorship money). But these teams had to start somewhere and it was by playing in the events that house top end talent.

I guess I am just saying that it is too bad that more BC rinks didn't enter to have the opportunity to gain the experience necessary to compete at the top level.

BC had seven WCT events this season! That's pretty good.

I disagree. There are many more factors involved as to why there aren't more BC teams competing. And if it wasn't for the world's being held in Victoria, this event would likely be scrambling for teams-as it did last year.

And while its true that BC had 7 WCT events this season, consider the absolutely horrible planning of them. 4 events crammed into the first 5 weeks one small spiel in December and then the final two in the last month and a half of the season-when many teams have disbanded, or their clubs are already closed or curlers are budgeting their time and money for the fall.

In short, poor timing turns off the local teams.

Haven't been following during any games but this is the event link

On another note any word on what the ice is like this year? Scores all fairly lopsided last night.

Looking at the Victoria Curling site, Nikis Eden, Jeff Stoughton, Rob Fowler, Brad Gushue and Glen Howard punched their tickets into the quarter finals. I predict Kevin Koe and Tom Brewster will get the two final spots.

McEwen and Martin are playing for a B Qualifier spot right now. The loser will be trying for the same spot as Koe. Could be a battle there - assuming they both get into the qualifier.

Mike steals 2 in 7 to tie it up. Whether or not he wins this game, that was quite the comeback.

a loss in this game for edin after 8-1 and the free guard rule would have been cancelled ... probably should not apply in last ends anyway ..

Martin, Howard, Koe, Stoughton will fill up the betting favourite list and if Jacobs returns from the Ford Worlds with european scalps on his mantle he'll be up there too.

McEwen should be a lock for 5th or 6th favourite, his lack of Brier success will prevent him from being seeded 1 to 3.

After that the only rink I see with a outside chance of taking the duke - Brad Gushue.

After Gushue the roster should be filled in by a smattering of guys like Cotter, Epping, Rumsfeld, Menard, Fowler, etc.

Gushue and Jacobs have a lot of work to do in order to get to the trials. Jacobs will need fry to curl like he did for the playoff weekend at the brier just to make the playoffs in Victoria.

Yes. Right now 5 spots for the trials are all but guaranteed to stoughton, howard,Martin, koe, and mcewen.

Epping is leading for the 6th spot. At one point he had a sizable lead but Jacobs and Gushue have closed the gap considerably. If jacobs does well at the worlds he should pass epping which will set up a very interesting players championship which will likely decide the 6th spot.

If you don't grab top 6 you take your chances in Kitchener.

After further review I believe it will be very hard for Jacobs to catch epping and likely impossible for Gushue . Such a complicated system. Lol
