To me it looks like one PLAYER will win all the money (not one TEAM). Hard to tell right now but I think it will be much like a card tournament where you earn points for yourself while playing on a Team, then the next game you have new teammates but collect points for yourself. Player with the most points wins. Clues to this are how all the players (both male and female) are listed in alphabetical order on the website instead of by team and sex. Perhaps it will all be mixed doubles so the games are shorter and they can play more games.
Also from the TSN website:
"The mixed-format competition goes from August 25-27 and will broadcast on TSN"

If so, it's just another example of curling becoming more and more star-driven. Pays the bills, I guess, but I'm not a fan.

Assume people have seen the rules. Skips draft a team of 2 men, 2 women, and can't draft regular teammates. Should be good for a laugh.

Well they have promoted this event well. And the format is kinda cool. Now, the teams have been picked. Their website is a bit lame though - and there is no mention of this giant purse anywhere. I checked the worldCurl site - not there. And it is not listed in events - here. It is a media event with good sponsorship and a fun feel. But what, actually is at stake? Anybody know?

Ah - thanks.
Found this on the FB page: The first-ever Everest Curling Challenge is a made for TV invitational, world-class curling event with a novel game format. The event, which will be broadcast in Canada on TSN and live streamed on ESPN3, will bring together 32 of the world’s top women’s and men’s curlers to compete for the single largest prize in the sport - $200,000.
Interesting that it will be divided by four. I assume the winnings would go to the team funds - maybe. #yaThink?

5 hours and counting
Still no team listings almost 5 hours after the draft, Do you think curling fans would have watched this live on one of the 6 TSN channels or at least watched online? What's the hold up? And how difficult would it have been to stream online at the very least?

Compare this "pre-season" event to what the NFL has on offer, and it's no comparison. This is far more interesting by a long chalk. I'll be tuning, er..., I'll be internettting in on ESPN3 for sure.

Wondering if the regular members of team Sweeting will have their names and sponsors and not those of team Moiseeva like the had during the draft.

I was wondering if the sponsor see the curling watching demographic as likely clients.
Format didn't turn out great as all the men's teams won by wide margins. Still, worth a try and a good icebreaker for some of the top teams.

The male skips won all four qualifiers so maybe next year just the skips will swap, with the male skips inheriting the female skips entire teams and vice versa.

The one ad I saw for Everest was very creepy. I guess curling fans are mostly the target demographic, given their average age.
The results so far were entirely predictable. Only Homan, when she is in mid-season form and playing with a great male third would have a chance against the top male skips. Why embarrass the ladies? It makes no sense.
Why is it impossible to find (as far as I can tell) the actual results of the draft. It would be fascinating to see in what order the players were selected. Were the thirds all picked first or could you pick your team in any order? All we've been told is that Sweeting had the first pick and she chose Nicholls.
How were the teams chosen? Why was the Epping team there instead of the McEwen team?
I think the rule they are trying where covering the pin is worth two points is amazing and if implemented will revolutionize the game much like the free guard zone did. Anything that gets rid of blank ends is a good thing.

who is doing the stats here? gushue is marked at 100% when he should really not be. he had an attempted guard mega heavy slip into the rings .
vic says "and brad gushue will throw the perfect game and advance to the final". except he didnt curl perfect. or are we going to pretend not to see his mistakes

This event has been very heavily promoted by WCF especially on its Facebook feed. Is this the start of marketing and testing campaigns by WCF to develop a made-for-TV mixed-4s event for the Olympics? And/or a new pro-curling made-for-TV cashspiel series?
Seeing the pictures of these Everest teams in their fungible color-coordinated jackets after a staged pro-sports "draft" with oh so careful logos everywhere just makes me think of a TV game show I'd rather not watch.
I hope, at least, the WCF mixed doubles is forgetting its past experiments on banging music and simultaneous shooting to attract more TV viewers.

As a long standing CO supporter - she landed in the cash pot yet again. Her chirping is intelligent and timely. Her smarts are second to none. And she generates chemistry. WTO CathyO - and Brad, EJ, n Lisa. Wonder if it goes to Chelsey's coffers. Probly. Happy days early in the season.
Dumb event though.
I agree - having the logos all in place right after the draft was daft. 1970's marketing style. #OldstersThink. #OuttaDate. Who's Kiddin Whom
