Is curling the “whitest” sport in Canada

Canada is increasingly a country of visible minorities, and yet that does not seem to translate into elite curling. Can anyone name elite curlers, past or present, who belong to a visible minority

There was one person on Greg McAulay's 2000 Canadian and world champion team who was not Caucasian.
Probably just a matter of time.

The Koes are First Nations (father is a Residential School survivor https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/...chool-1.4538601) -- and Matthew Ng from Team Jamie Koe is Asian. Also Brittany Tran in Kerry Galusha's team.

While it is true that Caucasians are over-represented in curling, I think the primary reason for it is because curling is still a 'cultish' sport. By that, I mean that is is not wide reaching or popular.
Those of us who play the game follow it on TV, etc., but it is still a foreign activity to the huge majority. And when the majority of people are not exposed to something, they are not really aware of it.

The Olympics have helped to bring awareness of curling to people... but it is a fleeting awareness - after the two weeks of Olympic activities is over, curling is forgotten - largely because of the increasingly large number of distractions available to humans today (mostly via 'technology').

Also, the countries that the visible minorities (or their parents) have come from are not countries in which curling is popular (or, in some cases, played at all) - so they likely had no exposure to curling before coming to Canada.
It will evolve, as all things do... but until curling reaches the popularity level of other, more well known sports, it will logically lag behind insofar as the participation of visual minorities is concerned - because it lags behind insofar as general participation is concerned.

And clubs need to encourage and welcome visible minorities. The adult learn to curl programs are a good place to start.

I recently attended the Sydney Scotties with my wife. We both noticed that not only were there few memebers of ethnic groups or minorities represented in those attending - or on the curling teams, for that matter - but that the majority of those in attendance were older Canadians. There were suprisingly few “kids” in the audience.

These issues need to be addressed by the curling community.

Want more minorities to play? Then teach the sport in public school where all the kids, from all ethnic backgrounds, happen to be.

Kids tend to get exposed to the sports of their parents. Mom's and Dad's with a Pakastani heritage are more likely to sign their kids up for soccer or cricket because that's what they played. But at school there's little or no parental influence and an emphasis on a far greater diversity of sports.

At least this way they're exposed to the game at a young age. And sometimes all you need is taste of a game to fall in love with it.
