Switzerland Womens Championship

Appears this one will come down to another confrontation between Binia Feltscher, the veteran and Alina Paetz, the young Ladyhawke . . . .

Silvana Tirinzoni is still in the mix but her round-robin record is an indifferent 4-4 with 2 games remaining - she may still challenge for a playoff berth but she's still without her regular 3rd (Cathy O did some super-subbing while Tirinzoni was on tour in North America)

All the good players are taken in the Swiss championship so Silvana had to borrow a fawn from a non-competing team (Barbezat I believe)

Silvana is a top skip, don't get me wrong - but she really needs all hands on deck. With a less than stellar 3rd, she'll fight hard but unfortunately won't be able to present the necessary horse-power required to get out of Switzerland - AGAIN!

NB* - I thought she might have pitched Mirjam Ott or one of her great players to come out of retirement and help - but alas, didn't happen!

After only sweeping the kitchen floor for the past 3 years,

I can't imagine Ott being enticed out of retirement to play

Third for Tz, a position she has never played.

actually, mirjam did play 3rd. she was 3rd for luzia ebnother in 2002 when she won her first of 2 olympic silvers. she was also alternate on tirinzoni's team in 2007 and when she subbed in played 3rd. so, theoretically she could play if called upon and if she wanted to

however mirjam is currently coaching alina patz so it would be impossible for her to play 3rd for tirinzoni

and also, legend lets have some respect for the player tirinzoni does have playing 3rd.do you honestly think tirinzoni would have called in jenny perret if she didnt think she was a strong enough player for this level.

No offense to Jenny Perret - but I think Silvana chose the best available 3rd; unfortunate that Jenny is not quite up to Tz normal world standard!

If she somehow manages to finagle her way to the Swiss championship she'll theoretically have first choice of bringing aboard any of the top swiss curlers as her 3rd. However, if she wins (95% chance she won't) she'd probably stick with Perret, wouldn't she?

It would be pretty cruel not to. If siegrist is healthy and trinzoni somehow wins then siegrist will take hr regular position and jenny would be the alternate

Silvana update: With her back against the wall and needing to topple the 8-1 Paetz machine in the final round of the Swiss round-robin, Silvana Tz managed to topple The Ladyhawke and qualify for the Swiss playoffs (out of the 3-4 position)

Paetz & Feltscher both finished at the top of the heap with 8-2 records. Silvana and a swiss fawn finished at 5-5, tying for 3rd.

Tirinzoni is such an underdog I can't help but cheering for her to pull thru in Switzerland.

Whatta story that would be?

Still has to win her 3-4 game against some motivated fawns and then beat Paetz and/or Feltscher - either once or twice!

Here it is - Silvana Tirinzoni, without her great 3rd player, finding a non-qualified 3rd from the Swiss curling pool and still alive in Flims. Its a good story even if it ends next game - its a great story if she somehow goes the distance!

So.. Trinzoni took the 3/4 page and awaits loser of 1/2. Not an impressive run, but she is in the running. 3 good teams remain after double RR.

So Team Woundeds (Tirinzoni) nice little run ends in a tight thriller vs. Ladyhawke Paetz.

Paetz is a solid young shooter with a great team - and of course we all remember her when she was fairly fresh on the scene and all but destroyed Jennifer Jones to win the world championship. She didn't just beat Jones in the final - she whupped JJ in the round-robin and again in their first playoff encounter before dissecting her in the world final - Jones was completely out of sorts - and mustered a furious last end comeback that almost had me convinced Jones was going to win her 2nd world gold. But alas, Paetz made a wonderful last rock draw (tick-assisted) to the button for GOLD.

Paetz vs. Feltscher will be an interesting final.

immo Paetz is a far better shooter and delivers a far truer rock than Binia F.

However, Binia is a crafty campaigner that knows full well how to defend her turf (inside the 8 foot). She may look all-friendly and smiley but that belies the heart of a killer. She can perplex the best teams in the world - and has for the last few years.
