Worst delivery in men’s curling

Kinda surprised at what a poor delivery Karrick Martin has. It seems to work. Anyone worse?

Jed Brundidge. Puts tons of weight on his broom that he rests on the ice, and slides out half cocked. Never seen anyone worse.

Always more important what happens at the other end of the rink .

Karrick Martin’s delivery doesn’t look like how the delivery is usually taught, but he shot 94% in the WC game. Obviously there’s no way team Bottcher is even in the top 50 teams without an excellent lead. Saying his delivery is poor means the rock regularly ends in a bad spot, but that’s not the case here.

Maybe it's just the angle of the camera, but Epping seems to fishtail out with his slide? Looks weird sometimes.

I am going back a bit but I can think of 2 good examples of a delivery that would not considered to be really smooth but the results spoke for themselves. That would be Ed Werenich and especially Don Bartlett.

I would find it rather difficult to describe Martin's delivery/slide as "Poetry in Motion'.

But in terms of results, what's not to like?

While we're reminiscing to the old days, Guy Hemmings, with his unkempt look and style had a "brat-worst" delivery, but it got him and his team to two Brier finals.
He was a real ham!

Give me an 'ugly' looking delivery with good results over a visually 'perfect' delivery with mediocre results any day.

In other words, what the delivery looks like visually doesn't matter at all.

I wonder how many good young curlers were discouraged from the game just because an overzealous coach tried to change their delivery into something that looked more 'proper'.
Memo to coaches everywhere: If it's working, LEAVE IT ALONE. The worst thing you can do is to take a person away from their natural way of doing things, no matter what it looks like.

The skinny guys have an advantage in deliveries..they can “get down”low behind the rock flat footed whereas us bulkier rock chuckers usually come out much higher(not possible to bend the knee that much) so end up sliding in a much higher sliding position much like young Mr Martin..Hec Gervais mastered the bulky slide by having the touch of a surgeon while having the grace of a Pelican lol...great curler and great guy👍

Perhaps not a bad delivery per se, but both BJ Neufeld and Kevin Koe have unusual deliveries, really low to the ice but seems to work for them, almost catlike.

Jamie Koe is noticeably crooked on every slide, and his non-broom crutch is unsightly. I'd still pay good money to have his ability.

That Guy Hemmings knee down delivery was another classic.

Delivery Principles

I always tell my athletes "I don't care if you slide like a backwards assed cat, as long as you can repeat it!" Much like the golf swing where the most important thing is what's taking place at the moment of contact, what's happening at release is what matters. In the end, being accurate on the broom and throwing the right weight are the principles that matter. I often think about teaching the delivery backwards... "Here's where you need to be at release. Now how do you get here?" Love this game!

Good one. But whatever works.. Bonus points awarded to Don for also having the worst pair of curling shoes in men's curling, bar none.
Probably very comfortable though.

I wasn't knocking Walchuk's abilities.
He just had a slide that I thought looked awkward.
And ugly shoes!
