Has anyone seen any Brier or Hearts TV numbers? If so, please post them here.

The Brier final drew 914,000, and thus was topped out by the hearts. I don't recall that happening before.

I think the biggest difference was the 8:30 start time. That thing wasn't over till almost midnight and that's without playing a tenth or an extra end! That, combined with the lead probably factored in with regards to the numbers...

Any numbers on the 1-2 game in the Scotties? That was up against Leafs-Sens. I wonder how the Scotties final would have done if it had not been up against the Oscars?

Scotties bests Brier

We like to talk in this space about the importance of the drawing power of TV markets in sports teams. Big markets drive big numbers and, duh, small markets grab small numbers. This self-evident truth is more important than ever with TV networks paying so much of the freight.

Looks like you can add curling to that equation. TSN reports that finals’ ratings for the Scotties Tournament outdrew those of the Brier this year. That happens once for every time we actually win something in Roll Up The Rim at Timmy’s.

There are reasons being offered. The Scotties had a particularly compelling field. Due to the Brier’s Alberta location (the Scotties was in Ontario) the games came on later at night. (But then, the Scotties were up against the Oscars for its title game.)

The major reason is likely the Northern Ontario/ Manitoba matchup. While 914,000 viewers is nothing to sniff at on TSN, you can’t help but wonder what the number would have been like with a finalist from southern Ontario, Alberta or B.C.
Brad Jacobs’ underdog win for NO was a nice Cinderella story, but you can bet the sponsors don’t want it every year. Something the NHL should note as it props up ratings losers such as Tampa, Phoenix and St. Louis for the sake of parity.

This is the curling hotbed of Canada. And I was surprised at the low attendance numbers. But I think the explanation is simple. Kevin's horrendous start drastically reduced the walk-up crowd.

Of course the women's curling was more exciting which would affect viewership.

A number of semi-viable explanations

1. Time zone - Brier in Edmonton, Hearts in Kingston - possible explains some late night snoozeaways in the east!

2. Rosters - While Jacobs & his Mad Lads are easy on women's eyes he's fairly unknown, Jeff is well known but plays the same pedantic game.

3. Rosters - Jennifer Jones is the biggest crowd magnet in curling (mens or womens). She's been a daring and unpredictable comeback queen for over a decade. Also easy to look at, particularly with a stunning new and young third.

Rachel Homan isn't hard on the eyes either. Her team is also extremely attractive - maybe even more attractive than the Distracted Danish Blondes.

All in all the games were similar. A veteran superstar team being vanquished by young first time winners. But nearly 150,000 more for JJ/Rachel has to have more than a few people at CCA and TSN scratching their heads.

Viewers may have assumed that MB would conquer NO by a long mile and didn't bother tuning in. The opposite happened and it turned into a bloodbath with MB as the victim.

Why Jeff had to do his spinerama twice instead of just shaking hands at the end...I don't know.

However after this Brier Jacobs and those buff boys will now be known. Thank goodness they have blown away the stereotype of the "portly", "wimpy" "odd-looking", "ancient" male curler.
