There will also be several new events this year including a June beginner's spiel, August level one instructor clinic and a Halloween spiel.

College curling is growing here. UNL grows to 4 teams with Creighton/UNO participants becoming more noticeable. Efforts are underway to grow UNO's numbers with the new addition of college ice.

Fantastic news! Any other schools coming on board?

Two big crashes yesterday took out some contenders. Dumoulin was vying for the white jersey of best young rider. Gerrans is a super domestique for Orica. Cancellara would have been a favorite in the time trials.

They actually ended up neutralizing the race for 45 minutes due to the lack of medical support and ambulances available on the course.

Today was the pave' which probably took a toll on those that were banged up. Froome loses the yellow to Martin. He is probably happy about that, can't defend for two weeks. Martin is not a GC threat and can keep it until they hit the mountains. Froome did put time into all the GC contenders today. He is my pick to win it this year.

I'm pretty sure that we have to ignore Jimbobogie until he surfs over to our Samuel Fry thread and makes good on his ill-advised World Senior Men's prediction. (as I recall, we got gold) I'm thinking that $18.35 should do it ($20 Cdn). Then forgiveness would flow.

Thanks, Jimbo. All past wagers and indiscretions are cleared.

Duluth was selected as a Top Foodie City. In the local news, they spoke to curler Dustin Tomasetti who is the executive chef at Pick Wicks. We all know and love him as the one and only Specs.

Tony Martin might be out of the TDF with a broken collarbone. If so, the maillot jaune will fall to Froome. It will be difficult for him to defend until the end. Good thing is he has a lead over the other GC contenders. Still a long way to go.

Froome puts his stamp on Le Tour with a decisive win on the first day in the mountains. He was my pick to win this year. Still a long way to go but the team seems to be defending well.

The other big event this weekend is the Open to determine the champion golfer of the year. Good news is that there will be a lot of focus on Spieth and not a lot, hopefully, on Tiger.

Say what you will about Chambers Bay...at least the ball stayed put on the greens once it stopped...as has been pointed out, At St. Andrews they cut them too tight, and the stimpmeter was too fast for the winds they knew were possible, even probable, during Open Week.

Funny how no one is giving the RAA the grief they were giving the USGA last month...

When did the R&A get control of the weather? I think that Chambers Bay could have controlled the amount of water that was put on the course. Totally different concepts. Let the entire course dry out or try to predict that the wind will blow 40+ MPH.

The R&A may not *control* the weather, but they certainly should have known from prior history that significant winds were all but a certainty during July.

Froome wins Le Tour as I predicted. Look out for Quintano in the future, that kid is good. Sagan wins another green jersey and closes in on Zabel for the most stages in the green. Dude is only 25. He will be here for years and dominate the green jersey.

So close today for Hearn to win the Canadian open. Was rooting for him. But Day bouncing back from missing the playoffs at the Open and winning was cool.

Cole Hamels might have thrown his best game as his last game as a Phightin'. A no hitter against the Cubbies. Think his trade value just increased a bit. Thanks Cole for all the good times, sorry that the team sucked around you.

Been playing some poker over the summer at the casino. Just happened to cash in three tournaments last week. Kind of like skipping, have a plan for the end and the next end and the last end. Stay patient and wait for a mistake.

Right now, in my neck of the woods, we have UNL and Wayne State.

The club is trying to foster a relationship with the Univ. of NE Omaha (which will have a new Division One hockey arena....with practice rink) and with individuals from Creighton Univ.

Can't wait when UNO offers tours of their new facility!

One of the best things about the "off" season are the curling picnics. Last weekend was the Nutmeg BBQ picnic, yes, with real BBQ. Our resident smoker stayed up until 2am to make a smoked brisket. Also made smoked ribs and grilled chicken thighs. The result were really good, no one went home hungry and a good time was had by all. I made a grilled corn salad which seemed to be a hit since it was gone at the end of the evening.

This weekend is the Plainfield(s) (tm Tuck) picnic. Held in far western NJ on a horse farm. Pool with waterfall, lots of good food and of course at least two kegs. Might be a bit hot but one other feature is the very large covered patio complete with ceiling fans. Should he a hoot as always. One missing feature again will be the water slide of death. There was a nice long water slide set up one year in the field next to the house. After the third or fourth injury, it was retired from the festivities. There will be horseshoes, Kubb (look it up) and lots of frivolity. Trying out a watermelon/feta/mint salad for this one.

Tuck is missing in action so it falls to me. Tomorrow is the Haskell Invitational. Triple Crown winner is running and going off at 1-5. Stupid odds. Keen Ice is also running at 12-1. If you must bet, which I am not, bet $20 on Keen Ice across the board (WPS). If he wins, you score big, second will get your money back, third, thanks for donating. A more reasonable bet would be $10 on place and $20 on show. Probably will win if he hits the board.

Interesting that none of the other older horses are running. If AmPho goes to Saratoga for the Travers, throw him out. Saratoga is the graveyard of favorites. I don't think he goes. Will be rested until the Breeder's Cup after the Haskell. He will not win the Classic, too many other, older horses out there.

I'm a fan of Competitive Edge. If he and American Pharoah get into a speed duel, maybe Keen Ice passes spent horses...but I'll be betting Competitive Edge.

CE set the stakes record for the Pat Day Mile (formerly known as the prestigious Derby Trial). The record had lasted from the 1960s (Ack Ack). He's a serious player.

Here's a weird betting term for the non-horse-players. It's called "a bridge jumper". Pros wait for a "sure thing" like American Pharoah to be running before a very large crowd. Once the Place and Show pools near six figures, they place extremely large Place and Show bets on the favorite.

Now wagering $2 and getting back $2.10 for a net of ten cents doesn't make much sense to most of us. However, you need to look at it from the pros' point of view. Pretty much a sure thing...probably less than a 1% chance that American Pharoah finishes out of the top three. So if you think that a 5% return is pretty good for an investment over the span of a year, then 5% for 1 minute 48 and 1/2 seconds is a really good rate of return. (Yes, the winning time is going to be 1:48.5)

These people bet huge. Hence the suicidal term Bridge Jumper.

So here's the deal: Show bets (assuming AP finishes in the top three) may not pay very well. Conversely, if AP unpredictably places outside of the top three, the Show bet will pay fantastically well.

If you're just doing a couple of bucks and hoping that it covers your drinking tab, I'd go with Competitive Edge. Keen Ice, for all real curlers, isn't a bad choice but he'll need the early leaders to go really fast and tire out...which could happen.

You do this professionally, don't you.

THat's exactly what happened...the leader blew his wad, Keen Ice came from the back...American Pharoh came from one length behind...

And, honestly, that was the race...Keen Ice does place, so Tuck's strat makes a couple bucks if you bet it...

I did my usual and had four horses boxed, ex/tri/sfc.

I hit all three and made a whopping $1 profit, ha ha.

Now, with AP going off at 1/9 obviously any combo with him on top was going to pay diddly. My hope, however, was that AP would hit the board and bring that purse money with him into the trifecta or superfecta pool, hopefully with Keen Ice on top.

Well, it kinda almost happened. In any case I didn't lose anything, so that's better than nothing I guess.

Summer is coming to a close. We are scheduling ice install for the end of the month. Also today was the Flip Flop Friendly between some of the local arena clubs. Brooklyn, Jersey Pinelands and Ocean State. Great idea for these clubs.

Our ice will be ready for use by the second week of Sept. Too early for me but I am stepping away from ice tech work this season.

Look at it this way...Australia and New Zealand have just wrapped up their Nationals...

Both championships were held in Dunedin, New Zealand-home of the only real curling rink in the Southern Hemisphere.
