A Challenge to WCT or Curling Canada

As the 2015 curling season winds down, here's my challenge to either the WCT or Curling Canada.

Be the first to host a Canadian Curling Winter Classic!

The thought would be to follow in the steps of the NHL Winter/Heritage classic outdoor match. A regular season NHL game, first played and televised in Edmonton, AB in '03 in front of a frigid 57,000 fans. Four years later, the first U.S. based outdoor game in Buffalo in front of 71,000. Both games I remember clearly and with some fondness.

Picture this: A Grand Slam event scheduled to coincide with Ottawa's Winterlude, played on the Rideau Canal, day or night with Parliament Hill as a backdrop. The ice would obviously be a challenge, but from all of the laurels being given about today's CF Elite 10 ice, this is the guy who could pull it off.

Alternately, Curling Canada hosting an outdoor Season of Champions series, either Brier related in Ottawa, or Scotties in Grand Prairie AB.
Here's an idea: The Pre-Quelegation games could be played in an outdoor locale. Add something memorable to the teams that must submit to this otherwise regrettable event.

Definitely would be cool to see something like this here in Canada. They've got an outdoor event like this in Russia I think.

I doubt the Pre-qualifier teams for the scotties or brier would want to play outside to try and get themselves into the main event.

This might solve the McEwen problem in the short term but in the long-term it creates another top flight team competing n the event.

Of course, Mike's path to the brier out of Manitoba next year might be a tad easier - Stoughton and Grassie have retired, only obstacle is the meek game of Reid Carruthers . . . . and I don't know if Braden Moskowy will remain in Manitoba!

Carruthers and a couple graduating junior teams!!!

This may also give Chelsea Carey a back door way to the Scotties for the Women

Well, we should within a month or two what Fowler is up to esp. finding a 3rd if he's going to back to skipping his own squad. In the meantime, we get to Stoughton one more time at the Player's.

I suppose the NHL ripped off the idea from the Scots, with their "Grand Match"; curling that is...
The last official event of this nature was held in 1979, with an aborted attempt about 5 years back.
Here's a link to the wiki page for those interested.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Match

Anyways, we stole the whole curling thing from the Scots, why not steal their outdoor match scheme as well; they're not doing it much these days...

Hadn't heard about the one in Russia. Hey, maybe that's where Putin has been the last week or so....

Bad enough that teams are relegated and you want to make them play on outdoor ice too?

The problem with the Rideau Canal would be with local residents who actually use it for their daily commute during the week and for family skating on weekends.
After all, we're talking about Ottawa...

I doubt the NHL was thinking of Scotland's Grand Match when it started its outdoor hockey games. Instead, North America's robust pond hockey scene and any novel way to generate more TV and stadium revenue probably triggered it.

The Red Square Classic even with refrigerated outdoor ice had some weather delays but its format with OOM points, eight teams, eight end games played mostly to just 4-6 ends is a great template to create more made for TV events.

I happened to be driving near the last NHL outdoor game last month and got stuck in its traffic. 70,000? paying fans packed in. $500,000 to install the ice on a football stadium.

Lots of new refridgerated outdoor ice has been built in major US cities from Chicago to Buffalo and Brooklyn. No need to spend $500k to get it. I keep thinking this week of golf's Augusta National which has "old" champions always invited as well as the top current pro and amateur champions. A Wednesday short 9-hole warmup game with player's children serving as caddies. Qualifiction rounds then a weekend of playoffs. One day players will make money for that sort of short pro/am/masters event on outdoor ice. Imagine Russ Howard v. Brad Jacobs in a 4-6 end outdoor game. Any bets on who would win? I've seen pix of Howard playing the Drambuie Ice Golf match....

the problem is that people seem to think those top teams on the cash tour deserve to be at the brier more than some lower ranked team.

well guess what? just because they have done well on tour does not mean they deserve the right to be at the brier. they dont deserve anything. they get what they deserve and if they win the provincial and get to the brier they deserve it.

if a team like mcewen does not make the brier than to bad. sorry but i dont believe him winning a lot of money should get him to the brier. let him earn his way there the way everyone else does. and the same goes for all those teams who won a lot of money but failed to get out of provincials

My bet is that CCA with Warren Hansen as event coordinator are too staid, conservative and set in old ways to take a chance on something this bold. But on the other hand Pierre Charette; this guy played with Guy Hemmings, who as a team were quite creative and bold in their play and outlook in their day.
