I remember watching the 1961 (I think it was) Brier tie breaker between The Richardsons and Hec Gervais, which I think was the first nationally televised curling, but I don't remember who the announcers were (I was 2 when I first started watching curling in a club, 9 in March 1961 when I first watched curling on TV, and 12 when I played my first game in the fall of 1963) .

Cross Canada Curling in the early 60's, it was mostly Doug Maxwell, Don Whitman occasionally.

After that, in the late 1960's aand 1970's, it was mostly Don Chevrier and Doug Maxwell (Johnny Wayne of Wayne and Shuster did a year of curling, and Alex Trebek did a couple of years of curling too) until Don Wittman and Don Duguid took over as a tandem about 20 years after the first TV curling.

Tension-creating Vic style

How long has Vic been around now? 25 years?...
Maybe he has become just way too "familiar" and repetitive...saying tension-inducing comments 3 times in a row has finally worn me down...Other colour TV guys dont seem to feel the need to always hype everything.. these tourneys are long....

I realize they are paid to fill the air.. but I also noted Russ was a little less non-stop talking when Al Cameron used his quieter, less Barnum & Bailey style.....
Can you imagine these guys doing a golf game?
Cheryl Bernard has it right...doesn't over do it.....

I appreciate we are darn lucky to have 5 channels of curling....with TSN....Just woukld be nice to finally have a change in the colour commentary.. the colur has turned a very very stale grey....

Compared to constant motor mouth Mike Harris over on Sportsnet, Russ is relatively mute.

Russ isn't bad but I wish he'd quit with the ice discussions all the time. One shot he'll say it's straightening out, the next shot he'll say they're getting more curl, the next he'll say the rock is gliding, the next he'll say the ice is slower, and over it all he'll talk about Hans and the fabulous ice even though apparently, according to Russ, it's changing with every throw.

Russ is a curler first and an analyst second so as a curler he will always blame the ice. A miss is a miss though and they are not making the perfect shot everytime. TSN use to always have the clock in the upper right corner for the hog times, they don't seem to be doing that anymore so as a viewer you can't tell how heavy or light they are unless you time it from your couch.

I'm good with both the broadcast teams. The Rogers guys provided a nice break from Vic and Russ, though having four in the booth is too much IMO. I think Bernard will be re joinig the team back in Halifax. Vic is pretty good at playing dumb and sacrificing himself for the good of the brodcast; He knows the answer to 95% of the questions he asks Russ making him (Russ) look pretty good.

Maybe I'm a minority, I'm not sure, but I don't have a problem with any of the announcers. Actually, I sometimes have music playing in the background with the TV muted as I watch curling. The various quirks and differing styles of the announcers don't detract from my enjoyment of this awesome game.

I think it's nearer 30. Since 1986 I think.
