ESPN3 will carry the TSN coverage

For USA readers: I just searched forward on my ESPN app and found that they will be carrying the TSN coverage that’s coming up this Saturday and Sunday.

Pleased to see Flasch pull off a doubleyou over Morris. Just a fan thing. Sorry to see Menard down in the EE against Simmons. #FanThing. Two qualifiers get there - Playoffs = short term goal.

It is of course early days yet but the Gordie Howe of Curling is 3-0 to start. As the ole saying goes you can't win the tournament on the front nine but you can lose it.

Team Howard leads their pool as the only undefeated squad. In the other pool Charlie Thomas is the only undefeated squad. Keeping that streak alive by the hair of their chiny-chin-chin. Taking a two in the tenth to tie it up and stealing the win in eleven over Team Menard. The loss dropped Menard to 2-2 and has gotta really hurt. But the boys have been through the wars many times many times before representing Quebec a kajillion times (11) and beating Glennie in a Brier final in what feels like a million years ago.(2006)

Being a native Quebecer, long time Howard fan and fellow geezer that would be my dream final as this is definitely the last kick at the Olympic can for the two of them. Plus Menard is the only team with a chance to carry the Quebec colours into the Trials.

Unfortunately the game has never really taken hold in my old home province. After Menard there might in fact be nobody so I'm hoping that Cinderella gets a chance to go to the ball before the whole province gets pumpkinized. Mind you Gushue has managed to top the world from a province that makes Quebec curling look like the 27 Yankees. So after Jean Michel I guess I'll have to root for everyone's favourite underdog the ole statistical anomaly.

Einarson is in a class of her own with this women's field - she should secure one of the two spots in play.

As far as the other spot is concerned - a real dog's breakfast. Kelsey Rocque should be almost as big a favourite as Einarson but the Rocque team fails to throw up consistently high percentages and are vulnerable to aggressive teams in late ends.

Shannon K would be the biggest story with her storied career, zero Scottie wins but a medal at the Olympics. Young team with the veteran skip.

Tracey Fleury is the biggest disappointment thus far. Too many losses - she may already have played herself out of a shot. Fleury has slumped badly in the last couple years and while Crystal Webster is an earnest shooter - she's not even close to being an elite 3rd.

Probably the Northern Ontario plodders led by the careful and deliberate Krista McCarville are odds-on for the 2nd spot.

McCarville may not play an exciting game but she plods on, sticks to her opponents like glue, prevents large ends being scored upon her.

If Einarson can somehow manufacture an identity before the trials she's probably the only one capable of upsetting the Coronation of Queen Rachel. Nobody but nobody will beat the Homan side if they're running on all cylinders. Jones is always a threat - but as most have observed JJ has become very tightly wound as she approaches her mid-40s; every shot seems to be life or death. Her big upside is a group of very good to great curlers who seem to enjoy playing for her. Whether they can throw up the necessary percentages to hurt Homan is the question. Same for Val Sweeting. At times a tremendous group of women curlers - other times not so much. While Jones is criticized for being too tightly wound Sweeting accusers can lay claim to a fairly listless skip with little to no fire in her belly. Similar to McCarville in that regard - only Val plays a far more offensive game!

Team Howard stays undefeated going to 4-0. I gotta confess I really don't know how the playoffs work for this event. I'm guessing that three out of each pool make the playoffs. The top one getting a bye to the semi-final.

What a dream start for the Hall of Fame veteran. He is joined by Adam Spencer, the super spare is filling in for the injured Richard Hart. The second vice to fall prey to a career ending injury from Team Howard in the last couple of years.

Team Casey gave them a real run for their money but Team Howard's deuce efficiency has been stellar so far this tournament and Team Casey couldn't hang on to their lead.

There is an amazing 5 out of the 7 teams in Pool A that sit at 2-2 with only one team out of the running Team Bice who are still winless.

On the B side Team Thomas is trying to get to 4-0 and secure themselves a playoff spot taking on Team Simmons tonight. The rest of Pool B is still up in the air. Three losses can still make a tie-breaker so no one is yet eliminated. Gonna be an exciting final day of the pool round robins.

If I am reading the standings an schedule correctly the Women's A pool could wind up in a 7 way tie at 3-3

Playoff structure

Seems to be the top three make the playoffs. First game is 1 v 2 with the winner going to the qualifier final. Loser of that game plays 3 with the winner going back to challenge the 1 v2 winner from the other ladder for the qualifying spot.

playoff structure

Just checked...slightly different from above...team 1 from first pool plays team 2 from other pool first. winner to final, loser plays team 3 from first pool for a place in the semis. winner of the two winners of the 1 v2 game qualifies for the roar. Loser of that game plays the winner of the semis for the other spot.

I'm skeptical there will be multiple tie-breakers, saying that just playing double/triple knockout would make more sense for this tournament as it's trying to get 2 winners.

The Plodder (Krista McCarville) and the Mercurial (Kerri Einarson) play later today. Winner gets a bye to semis - loser probably drops into a massive tie-break logjam.

Experience and risk-adversity have to favour Krista - but Kerri could do well coming thru the backwaters of a tiebreak festival.

Rocque appears out of it at this point, needs to win her last game - hope for at least 2 teams to lose and thus make it to tie-breakers.

This Old Glenny is quite the story.

Guy is 55/56 and he's vanquishing professional opponents with stealth and grit.

Lets look back at some of the legends of mens curling. When they won - when they folded.

Ken Watson was the first great legend of curling - won his 1st Brier at 32 (1936), captured his 3rd and final one at 45 (1949) - then retired completely from competitive curling.

Matt Baldwin - the Alberta Oil Ace won his first in 1953 (age 27) then his last of 3 at age 32 in 1958. Returned to a couple Briers but basically was landfill.

Ernie Richardson - The Saskatchewan Uprising began in 1959 and ended in 1964, winning 4 out of 5 Briers. Ernie was 29 when he started and 33 when he won his last one. Returned for one final encore in '64 but couldn't stand up to the late Lyall Dagg of BC.

Terry 'Bronko' Braunstein repped Manitoba as a youth of 18 in 1958, finishing 2nd to Baldwin. . . . . finally won a Brier in 1965 when he was still a youngster of 25. Last trip to the well. Stayed in curling til late 70s - closest call was finishing 2nd to the Big O (Meleschuk) in 1972 Manitoba finals. Pretty quiet after that.

Ron 'The Owl' Northcott - won 3 from 1966 to 1969 but that was it. Incredible team, incredible skip but he couldn't repeat success despite a shortage of great teams in Alberta from 1970 to 1975.
I think Owl was 31 when he one his first 34, his final.

Randy Ferbey was an accomplished star and long-time Alberta rounder when he captured his first Brier, eventually scrounging up 5. But Randy is an anomaly. Not a particularly gifted final rock shooter - he found fame providing naming rights to his own team featuring some real pistols shooting for him. Randy was still competitive into his mid to late 40s.

Kerry Burtnyk - won his first (of 2) Briers at age 22 in 1981. Won another won in the 90s at around 34. Stayed fairly competitive but couldn't get the job done.

Jeff Stoughton - the over polite Manitoba Monster won 3; repped Manitoba 10 or 11 times. Great shooter, pure delivery. Won his first at 32, another at around 36, final one around 41.

Kevin Martin - one of the greatest curlers in the sports history - but essentially shut things down prior to his 47th birthday. Just wasn't able to make those consistently amazing shots he was best known for.

Rick Folk - won a couple Briers. I think both his wins were achieved under 40.

Al Hackner - still a competitive senior he won his first in 1982, just over 30 and another to boot before age 37. Then the well suddenly dried up on Al and Rock 'n Roll Mick Jagger lookalike Rick Lang.

Gushue - still winning, currently Canada's #1 ranked team (for many reasons) but only has 1 Brier under his belt. Has 1 golden Olympic medal achieved under age 30, odds-on favourite to repeat Olympic representation for Canada. Could easily win a couple more Briers and worlds to move into top status.

Russ Howard - great record over 30 year career. Pretty much the closest to his younger brother Glenn - he was fiercely competitive into his late 40s.

BUT NOTHING LIKE OLD GLENNY. NOTHING!

THE GUY JUST ROCKS!

Can someone remind me why the pre-trials are not a triple knock out? Must be rather disheartening to be out of it yet still have to play.

7 way tie is possible if Fleury beats Tippin. The whole Women's Pool A could finish at 3-3.

A bit disturbing, yes. Especially since the winner(s) of the tie-break will be on a steamer of a roll while 2 times (the top 2 in their groups) wait for the heaters to come out of the tie-breaks!

Looks like Rocque and Meilleur got lucky. They're get into a modified double knockout with Tippin & McCarville it appears.

Losers of their little quadrant get a second chance.

Gonna be some gnarled teeth and anger cuz Meilleur and Rocque were 3-3 in their group while Einarson, who finished 4-2 is in a dogfight breakfast in the bottom half of the playoffs - apparently with no second chance if they lose.

Why that is - that's in the details of this type of 2 group round robin affair.

things that make me happy

funny how the ice is not breaking down , no pics or flat spots, no steering with those disgusting brooms that almost ruined curling for a few years

gunners 's team is hot - good chemistry - big contribution from all 4

Krista Mac a terrifically careful and deliberate plodder. The rookie lady, Meilleur won't get many more opportunities than when Krista scrubbed a double - yet Brianne couldn't take advantage to score a potential 3. I don't see Meilleur having the power or the style to take out McCarville.
Give them a better shot in the B.

But when you think about it Meillueur was probably the last Manitoba team you'd favour for an Olympic trials spot.
Obviously Einarson was the favourite but blew herself up. Birchard & Spencer were competent chasers but still not good enough. Meilleur was just an afterthought - now she's fightin' like the dickens for a trials spot. Well done whether she gets it done or goes out fighting!
