I see the regional events for the Kootenays and the Island are up now on playdowns.com. I have to pick Buchy in the Kootenays and Dangerfield, Baier and Montgomery on the Island. Any favourites outside of those guys?

1st off I'd like to congratulate Team Pierce on their Bye to Provincials, they have put the time and money in and toured around BC and Alberta.

Since they had outgained us by a margin of 0.135 points, we wanted to double check that all the points awarded this year have been correct. What Team Dezura was questioning was not the points in Victoria. As the WCT & CCA site say, is that exemptions will be made for certain spiels, which was the case for Victoria, and before the event, everyone knew there would be points awarded there. What we are questioning, and still have not received an answer on is the points awarded at the Coronation Mens event in Maple Ridge.

Grant is a co-chair and sponsor of the spiel, and in the time leading up to the event, he had inquired if the event would be given any CTRS points to award to the qualifiers & winners. At this point he was told no, as there was only 9 teams entered. After the event was played, and everything was said and done, teams did get awarded points, with no communication to the event organizer or teams playing in it.

With the points that Team Joanisse won at this event, it had raised the Strength of Field Multiplier in Victoria by 0.05. With a reduced SFM in Victoria to .50, instead of the 0.55 it had, Team Pierce would have only been awarded 0.375 points, vs the .825 they did receive.

What our question has been to the CCA has been what is the minimum criteria for an event, as what is posted on their site & the WCT is obviously not the minimum. And who made the decision that it would be a CTRS event. The only response we got, was that 'Everything is correct', which is not a direct response to our question. If the minimum is only to have a 0.5 SFM, could there be a spiel with 4 teams and have points be awarded?

Luckily, we have 2 other routes to get to the BC's and we accept that there likely won't be any clarification from the CCA or CurlBC. We will be in Cloverdale battling with the other team from the Coast to get those spots to the BCs!

Where the issue lies with this is the lack of transparency and communication. Not in this case, but a possible situation could be a team missing out on the Olympic trials, or Canada Cup by a very small amount of points like this, and because of the lack of clarity for points in some spiels a team could find themselves on the outside looking in.

Good luck to everyone in playdowns in the next couple of weeks, and hope to see a bunch of you in Vernon in February.

Just an update...

I spoke with Gerry Geurts late last night, and received the answers we've been looking for for the last 4 days.

1) If spiels do not have the minimum entries, all spiels with a SFM of 0.50 or greater will be eligible for CTRS points as long as the prize purse meets the minimum requirements.

2) The SFM of events can adjust up to a month after an event based on the teams that actually play in an event vs. what had been registered. In our case, the SFM of Red Deer was lowered as a team there only had 2 of 4 players. Our points went down by about 0.30 sometime after the event, and sometime after CurlBC had posted our points on their site.

3) We agreed the wording on the rules may not be clear enough. My mistake was reading that base points would be halved if a SFM is 0.50. We were taking half the base points, then using the multiplier to calculate points. When the case is you just halve the points, but no multiplier is used.

So everything is all cleared up from our end, and it was just unfortunate it took so long to get clarity after a bunch of emails & calls.

I now have my PhD in the rules on CTRS & OOM Points, so let me know if you have any questions!

Glad you got clarification Kevin I'd hate for you guys to lose a spot due to unclear wording or rulings.

See you in Cloverdale.

Speaking of northern curlers, I was told tonight about an interesting situation this weekend at the women's playdown in Kelowna. Kelly Shimizu from the Richmond club has a fifth curler joining the team for this playdown event, as one of the regulars on the Shimizu team can't make it.

What is extraordinary about this situation, one I've never heard of, is that the fifth lives in Chetwynd. So, she's a BC resident and curls in BC, but comes from the Peace Country, which is under the Alberta curling jurisdiction. The Shimizu team applied for permission from Curl BC to have her curl with them, and received it.

Curl BC gave permission to someone from Alberta to play in BC playdowns? That's shocking. Simply shocking! If need be, I'm guessing she can always work a weekend fishing on the coast in the next couple years to satisfy any requirements.

Some provinces actually have a provision which allows one player from outside of that province to play....time to think outside of the borders it's a fact of curling in this day and age

Intresting to see in Nfld only 2 teams at provincial, travel issue seems to be a big reason. I guess if that happened in our province those 2 teams would have to go play somewhere else as i dont believe it meets curl bc min requirements lol . Well were lucky we still have 16 teams at our provincials. Good luck to the teams, hope the ice is great, and we have a great rep at the Brier.
