Dekalb Superspiel - Women

Wow! Organizers were looking for a full draw of 32 teams...and only managed to attract 19! What does this say about competitive women's curling?

Is this due to:

1. Low purse structure
2. Lower CTRS points
3. Reputation of event 30 miles out of Winnipeg
4. Travel costs
5. Other?

One has to look within Manitoba first of all:

No JJ, No Einarson, No T Fleury, No CC Carey plus NO Laura Walker & her all-vets team.
McCarville should have made her 2018 debut here but probably has work committments.

Bini Feltscher is the only world-class team to attend - and Binia is starting to drop severely in world rankings.

Too bad they couldn't even get it to 24 teams.

Too many events? The teams missing were at the grand slam last weekend...Team Jones were in China the week before.

Yep and there is another Slam next week in Thunder Bay which would make a difference. I also think the top teams try to reduce the number of events they enter the first year after the Olympics.

Purse

$45K is nothing to sneeze at. However the champ gets about $15K, and it tails off in a hurry from there. Only first or second would make expenses.

Curling prize money sucks. I hope the teams' sponsors are making it worthwhile for top tier curlers because if not they could make more at the local pulp mill.

OK...maybe the "top" teams are over taxed and stretched (stressed?) out...but that opens up a half dozen spots for those 2nd tier foursomes who aspire to greater things! Where are all those teams?

Yes fair question and there are probably various reasons for it besides payouts.

Surprised JJ Jones has even played so many events thus far. She's got a STOH spot locked up as Team Canada.

You'd think she'd be very selective in choosing where to compete - perhaps trying to go light at the beginning and then pick things up once the Scotties approach.
Of course, not having to compete in Manitoba playdowns leaves a huge time void for Jones.

Also, she's probably one of the heaviest sponsored teams on the planet so not playing isn't exactly sponsor-friendly.

That said, Jones will be no more than an ornament at the Scotties. The real battles will involve Scheidegger, Homan, Einarson, perhaps Carey & McCarville.

Sadly, Jones (and her legions of fans around the world) will have to be satisfied with her being a show-curler - no longer capable of putting up consistent #s in the 82 to 90% range. JJ is a 58 to 72% skip now, only slightly better than struggling Laura Walker.

But the STOH committee is thanking their lucky horns she's in the field, no question!

I think a lot of the big name teams are just pointed at the GSOC event for the week. Some teams seem to just have their events more spaced out (like Koe and Homan who seem to limit their events from 1-2 weeks apart from each other), maybe to keep the players fresh and to keep them from peaking too soon and so early into the season and work/family/school commitments in between.
