It sounds like decisions were made that weren't theirs to make.
Curling is unlike the majority of sports where the "5th", or coach historically is along for the ride on the coat-tails of a team that earned the right to play in a National or International event.

Unlike hockey or other team sports, where a coach is integral to a team from day 1, the curling team rises to the top on their own merits.
Last minute paper experts appear to be exerting some power trip to justify their existence and/or salary.
I see this going before the courts in the near future.

n.b. Ed Werenich really should have brought that stripper along as coach all those years ago...

would this team have done better without korey? i dont know but odds are they would have done close to the same. korey really didnt make all that much difference in the final outcome i feel. there isnt one team the boys beat with him at skip that i dont think they couldnt have without him

so in the end was it really worth the change up?

If the Nationals is to be so irrelevant, then why not just appoint Team USA rather than having a playdown to determine who will represent USA at Worlds? Since you are saying that there was only one team at USA Jr Nationals that was strong enough to compete as is, namely the HPP team, then why not just appoint the HPP team as champion? We no longer have a level playing field for all teams, yet one team was able to overcome all the advantages given the HPP team and still win the Jr Nationals. That win should have earned for that TEAM the right to compete at Worlds.
If USCA does not believe its Nationals can determine the CORRECT champion, then just get rid of the championship or at least quit advertising it as competition to determine our world rep.

Many useful news items on the World Juniors' webpage. Nice job by the USA young men with their strong finish to avoid relegation. USA young ladies have their last game early Friday with a harder fight on their hands. Some games are being webstreamed. And very interesting info onT Tallin tourism on the event's visitor page. What a special venue for curling!

Great job by both the junior men and women to finish the round robin above the relegation line. That must be the main goal at first.

Fantastic job by the women to still be in hunt for the playoffs. Best of luck in the tiebreakers.

Here's your problem, Gerry...

It shouldn't be the HPP's right to make those decisions.

Training players for the future? Great, get on it...make it go.
Providing funds and coaches? Rock on.
Providing advice? Okay, not unreasonable.

However, the game and the advancement is the responsibility of the TEAM that is representing the US. The HPP Staff has way, way, way too much authority over the game right now.

And worse still, they aren't even demonstrating results...

Further...I would *HOPE* that our Junior Champs would struggle at Adult Nationals...they *SHOULD* struggle...as they are playing against players who have more experience, more resources, less distractions, and higher expectations. I'm actually more concerned about the fact that the girl's team made it to 4th than I am that the boy's brought up the rear. To say "You couldn't hack it against Pros, so we're concerned you won't be able to beat other kids" is to go so completely against the spirit of YOUTH curling that...it defies description.

YOUTH medals should be things to be celebrated when the occur, but not mourned when they don't...they're frickin kids, none of them can legally drink in the US...not all of them can vote even...we're putting way, way, way too much pressure on them by expecting performance and juggling teams that just WON OUR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS based upon 1 game at Worlds.

Panic moves at the Olympics? Sure...it happens (it *shouldn't*...but it does)...but at JUNIORS? No...not healthy for the athletes, nor for the sport.

USA Jr Women losing to Swiss in TB appears to leave them tied with Russia who also lost TB game. Does that mean that based on loss to Russia in RR, USA finishes 7th and this is relegated to the B pool for next year?

According to USCA, Junior women finished in 5th place. Guessing that is due to draw shot distance numbers since new World rules say there will only be one tie breaker draw played.

UPDATE: Looks like USA and Switzerland were 2-1 vs other tied teams and Russia and Korea were 1-2 so that explains the rankings, not Draw shot challenge numbers.

Kind of goofy that one tiebreaker was to get into the playoffs and one was to avoid relegation, but they all had the same record.

regardless of outcome, it makes a lot more sense to determine standings based on head-to-head results than on DSC.

Super happy and impressed that the junior teams did so well at worlds. They both started off with difficulty and finished well. That kind of turn around takes guts, smarts and maturity.

The women looked great against the Swiss on the webstream Friday in the final round robin game. They stayed positive and composed while the Swiss struggled and looked rattled. Then the fortunes flipped in the tiebreaker.

Regardless, these two USA teams played well and deserve CONGRATULATIONS all around.
