2013 World Curling Championships

I thought i would start the thread for the world championships since several countries will declare their teams this weekend.

The United States declares first. Women will send Erica Brown. Obviously a very strong team and they should do well at the worlds. The men will send Brady Clark...I dont really expect them to make much of an impact at worlds. The US men need a strong performance to get a direct spot into the olympics in 2014 and I dont really think this team is good enough to achieve that.

Eve Muirhead won the Scottish championship today, so I presume she's in.

Brewster vs. Logan Gray in the Scottish men's final.

Nice to see Logan Gray finally on the verge of having his breakthrough out of Scotland. He was such a fantastic junior player

I would have personally preferred if he had not made his break through into the final this year.

Temas Muirhead and Brewster are the reps for Scotland

Sigfridsson and Edin are not announced yet but odds are they will be the reps for Sweden

Does anybody know who will be making the ice in Latvia for the women's championship? Just looked up the arena online, it's a dedicated ice sports training facility with two hockey rinks. Fairly modern building, opened in 2005, so you'd think it would be a good facility to make great curling ice.

Switzerland's representatives will be Sven Michel and Silvana Tirinzoni. Great to see some young new faces out of that country!

young and new? tirinzoni has been to the worlds twice before , she is far from a young, new face

she's a tour veteran that has vastly under achieved in her career

Hard to fault her for not getting past Mirjam all these years. She's played great on tour the last couple years. I like their chances to contend this year.

no, im just saying though that after she won the world juniors in 99 alot of people thought she'd be the next great team for switzerland and she did win the title 2 years in a row and she still had mirjam to contend with at the time.

but after her world appearance in 2007 she kind of went away and has been more of a force on the cash tour but never really contended at the nationals

good for her for finally getting back out again

Yes but Peja picks the team that will play at the worlds. I'm sure he's going to pick Niklas.

sweden did follow a play down up until last year. now there are 2 major competitions: the national championship and the elite league

the winners of these 2 championships become the "national" teams for the year and recieve the funding and are the 2 teams eligable for being selected for world and european championships to rep sweden over that time

last year edin won the elite league and hasselborg won the swedish championship so because of that eriksson is not even in the running to be selected even if he won the elite league

eriksson did win the national championship this year so he will be eligable for selection for this years europeans and next years worlds

Definitely did not know that. I thought they were directly chosen, but maybe changed to a playoff system this time around.

I think one of Sigfriddson, Homan, or Muirhead will be the winner of the event. I would like to see Sigfriddson win after two heartbreaking losses in final. I do not think Tirinzoni could win, just possibly medal but not win.
