Just like to put it out there that the CCA didn't crack out these rocks fresh from the package for the Brier. The rocks were used in Fort Mac at the juniors. We all saw how lively they were there, but at the junior level, matching rocks was probably more difficult to see. However, teams like Martin, Stoughton, Gushue, Jacobs, Howard... teams with a decent chance at making it to the Brier, should have had scouts up in Fort Mac at least making some preliminary notes on the rocks, even if they were being used by Juniors...

It seems that the biggest complaint about the rocks is not that they are 'new', it is that they are so badly mismatched. Not sure how much scouting will help with that. There are quotes from multiple players saying rocks within the same set can differ by 15 feet.

Alberta v s NO

Third end - Alberta down 4-0. Martin drawing against 3 with his final shot. Hebert kicks Martin's shot off while it's still moving. Technically, he burned the rock, and Northern Ontario should have scored three. Given the final outcome, it didn't really matter anyway.

I saw that as well, though we couldn't tell if Jacobs or EJ gave Hebert a little nod or something before he kicked it off.

These boys dance to their own drummer for the most part. And unless you get an overzealous official, like ins Sask, not much is done. Everyone on that ice, knew the rock was going to stop.

Interesting that no official or WH has flexed their muscle over the head band!

What is the official rule?

During the NO vs NL game last night in the first end, NO's rock travelled right along the tee line (half the rock on one side and the other half on the other side). Brett Gallant swept it feverishly sweeping back and forth across the tee line. I thought one could only sweep behind the tee line. Ryan Fry was right there watching and did not appear to say anything. Is this legal?

Dave

Once the rock (or part of the rock) crosses the tee line it's fair game, had the rock continued to travel upwards and over the tee line then Brett would have had to stop sweeping but because it was touching the tee line the whole time he was doing the right thing.

Fair game, but he still needs to sweep behind the tee line.

That is what I thought. He was clearly sweeping on both sides of the tee line with each stroke. I thought it was perfectly legal for him to be sweeping the rock but he had to sweep it such that his broom did not cross the tee line.

Good thing he switched and the most effect down stroke part of his sweeping was still on the correct side of the line.

move on, this wining reminds me of when Dart was screaming at the officials while point her broom stick when Jones was delivering the last rock in a game years ago. No class then and, none here today discussing this.

While these are moot points, I think the lack of class better describes the actions of the curlers than the posts. I would like to see everyone show a little more respect for the game, if for no other reason than to serve as better examples to the spectators and viewing audience. Heberts kick was so quick there had to be paying fans in the stands who probably couldn't tell who scored. Small issues, but so unnecessary.

Its kind of embarrassing to see this alberta team bitching at each other like this isnt it?

would be something if new brunswick could pull this off and alberta fell to 1-4

This is incorrect. Only rocks touched before the hog line at the playing end are removed immediately.

In this case the moving rock was touched by the team to which it belongs after it had crossed the hog line at the playing end. There is no automatic decision in this case. The non-offending team then gets a choice of three options:

1. Allow the play to stand (in this case, the stone went out of play).
2. Remove the stone from play and replace any other affected stone to where it was (in this case, equivalent to 1.)
3. Put the stone where the think it would have ended up had it not been touched.

In this case NO essentially chose option 3., although they didn't actually place the stone where they thought it ended up and they simply told the officials AB had scored 1.

The only possible thing an official could have done to intervene would have been to force NO to actually put the stone where they thought it would have ended up. The official can't make the decision for the non-offending team.

Obviously everyone in the world would have been astounded had NO not taken option 3. in this case, but that's just how the game is played. If they had elected to remove the AB stone from play, we might have seen the first bench clearing brawl in Brier history!

Alberta still looks a bit off - but they're playing much better today. Grattan made a fantastic shot in the 2nd to get the steal - he was looking at a 3 spot against him if he doesn't make that. Same thing in 3 - great shot with Grattan's last to hold Alberta to a deuce.

Grattans 5th end comment was priceless - what a dig at Team Martin- he said "sometimes I have to look around and see if the world is ending'. Just about the perfect reaction to TM's bickering about rocks.

That comment from Jmes was great at the break..and very true too

Team Alberta was pretty classless. The on ice bickering with eachother , the comments about the match and the bratty way kevin shoved the rock away after he lost.

I understand that they are frustrated and losing at home but grow up already. Every single team has to deal with the same rocks, the same ice and i dont see anyone from any other team acting like this.

Martin and team actually played well today, better than their other losses. New Brunswick was just lights out. It wouldnt surprise me if Martin got it back together and went on a roll from here, winning his next 4 games, and possibly building enough momentum to win 1 or both his final two and eke into the playoffs or a tiebreaker. Not predicting it, but could see it possibly happening.

Interesting that yellow rocks have won 15 games and red rocks 17. Not a lot of difference.
