Club Timer / Buzzer

I am trying to gear up a buzzer that will buzz automatically with 10 minutes remaining to tell teams that they cannot start another end. We have too many games running 2 hours and 10 minutes when we have allotted 2 hours. Has anyone geared up something like this for their curling club?

Several of the clubs in our area (NY/NJ/PA/CT) have countdown clocks of one sort or another. Our club, for instance, has one clock per sheet. Others just use one clock and start all of their games at once. However, I don't believe any of them use a buzzer or bell as it was felt that it might distract someone in the middle of a delivery.

I agree, a buzzer might scare the curlers in their delivery. It may just be a matter of educating the curlers not to start another end if the clock on the wall reads 8:50.

If you can get an old laptop, a member of our club developed a simple clock that does what you want. It is free for downloading or you can use it online on his website.

Some clubs I've played at had a bell/buzzer that would sound off, others would just have a clock on the ice that you would watch.

Usually the rule for the clubs I've been at (with a 2 hour slot) is that after an 1:40 minutes (or 1:35 if your teams are slow), you finish the end you are playing, plus one more. This is more fair as it allows you to adjust your tactics for the end knowing the next end would be the last instead of having to changing things in the middle of an end. And it reduces the effects of someone slow playing to gain an advantage.

Clubs that only had a clock, you knew that if the draw started at 7 pm, at 8:40 pm you had to finish the end you were on plus one more. Up to the skips to stay on top of it.

We have a large digital clock...at the beginning of the season, everyone was good about watching it, now we ignore it...

We tried enforcing the 10 minutes rule and then found that the some unethical teams up by a couple of points deliberately played slow in the 7th end.

St Paul CC has used a buzzer for years. No reports yet of anybody being scared or distracted.

Madison and Four Seasons both use buzzers to announce when teams can finish their current end and play one more, never had any complaints. I believe the one in Madison is on an automatic timer.

We have an automatic buzzer and other clubs I played at had them as well. Usually 20 minutes before 2 hours and finish end you are in plus one. Sometimes still goes over. Never seen anyone distracted by buzzer going off.

I've noticed that at a club I've played at that did things that way as well. There were more than a handful of teams that used to slow play when they were up and completely forgot the whole point of sportsmanship in curling. As if winning a game in the Sunday Night League was the end all be all that you had to resort to unethical behaviour to win...

But that's why I hate that sort of system... a timed system that says play the end you're on plus one more prevents this (at least a little bit). And a buzzer is preferred for me, but when I'm skipping I make an effort to be aware of the time and I didn't have a problem with clubs that just had a timed rule without a buzzer.

Buzzers aren't all that much of an issue when they go off, or at least they shouldn't be... when I'm in the middle of my slide I tend to be focused that I don't notice it.
