You sure about that one? I thought the US national championship was the qualifying event for the ITU world championship.

It was originally back when the first ITU world championship was held in 1989. And it still is for age-group competition. But for the elites, the national governing bodies only *nominate* candidates to compete in the world championship and the world governing body (the ITU) decides who they will accept. Basically it boils down to points accumulated at ITU World Triathlon Series, World Cup, and Continental Championship events - events all owned and run by the ITU. There is no minimum number of points required, but they take only the top athletes from all those nominated by member countries. So if the US national champion does not have enough points to have a realistic chance of being accepted, he/she will likely not even be nominated.

Thanks for the clarification, I didn't realize how different the age group process was from the Elites. It makes triathlon a different beast than curling because the world governing body is using points as a criteria for accepting athletes.

Interesting memo. It appears that no significant changes are planned for the HPP next year. That's logical to the extent that it is an Olympic Quadrennial plan.

The wording that opens the door to some changes (for instance, dbsdbs, change to the World representative selection) is very interesting. My understanding of the new Governance rules is that hired staff has the authority to make such decisions. Yet it appears that input (at the very least) will come from the AAC and other committees and the Board. Whomever wrote the memo (Rick, I suspect) seems open-minded about some aspects.

A combine followed by funding the same number of teams (6) looks like the plan again. I'll admit to being disappointed that wholesale changes do not yet appear in the works; but I understand a Quadrennial Plan. I also understand that any wholesale change needs to be approved by our partners in the USOC...and they have firm opinions about what they will fund with their money.

So the "applications" are now up for the "HPP" Wouldn't it be more transparent of the HPP to just ask for donations instead of saying there is a $100 application fee???

Athletes are almost all pre-determined (most if not all from last year have been asked to return and told they need not apply) So it doesn't really seem like there are spots available unless they are increasing the number of athletes in the program, which they are not. SO....why would anyone pay $100 and apply to a program that only has a few spots if any? And what exactly are the "Administrative costs" involved in reading an application? Based on last year the expenses of the combine fell on the athletes.

Checks can be made out to USA Curling: This continues to be laughable!

The application says:

All applicants must be paid up members in good standing of the USCA and a member of a USCA-member club or alternatively, a one-time payment of a $100-per-athlete administrative fee must be paid.

To me, that reads that there is no cost to apply if you are already a member of the USCA and curling club.

Existing

i think that the existing athletes are only exempt from the combine. that doesn't mean they will automatically be invited back. i think they have all been asked to submit whether they are interested in continuing. since the coaches have been watching them all year, i can see why it wouldn't make sense to have them at the combine?

You do not have to pay $100 to apply for the combine unless, for some reason, you're not a current paid-up member of a curling club. Exactly the same if you wanted to enter playdowns but were not a club member somewhere.
