2016 Mixed

2016 Mixed is off & running. A few Brier skips in it this year. Alberta looks very strong. Ontario had a tough opener😉. Manitoba should not be underestimated either. The men are Seniors...the women just out of juniors....

Crowds are surprisingly good! We have had a pretty good crowd for most the draws. Sadly Manitoba & Ontario didn't make the championship pool! They Re in the seeding pool.

In Pool B, NT, YT, MB, and ON finished in a 4-way tie for third spot so only two of those teams would advance to the championship round. I can't find any record of tie-breaker games so does anyone know if the 4 teams for 2 spots tie was broken by strictly the head to head records of the 4 teams involved in the tie? NT and YT were both 2-1; MB and ON were both 1-2 amongst themselves.

So I see the stupidity of two pools is continuing. And with 5 teams tied at 3-3 how do 3 advance to the championship group and 2 don't? Were tie breaker games used or was this all determined by a skills contest?

Once again, there's no reason for two pools. All this does is remove two games for each game, but creates more tiebreaker situations and now keeps 7 teams -deemed out of contention - at the event for 6 meaningless games.

If your goal is to reduce the time required and the number of games then at least let the non-championship group teams go home.

Pool A was easy. SK at 3-3 was alone in 4th in the pool so the 4 Pool A teams advancing to the championship pool were AB, NO, NS, and SK. Pool B was more interesting. NB and QC were first and second respectively leaving YT, NT, MB, and ON in a 4-way tie for third at 3-3. Only two of those teams would advance to the championship pool. Since I saw no tie-breaker game results I assumed that Curling Canada's tie-breaker process was head to head record between the tied teams. YT and NT were both 2-1 against the other three teams MB and ON were both 1-2.

I hope it did not come down to LSD (or DSC, however they now refer to it) as the determining factor, although we saw that being the case for the play in game when the draw for hammer totals were used to eliminate NS from the competition.

What's weird is that it's hard to find a page where the CCA outlines how teams qualify and how the champ/seeding pools work. Tried looking on the mixed website and nothing.

Gives them a chance to change what they're doing without scrutiny.

It did...but NS is still in the championship pool.

I also tried to find an explanation and nothing. Can someone tell me what the seeding pool is for? Are they still doing relegation?

The seeding pool determines how the two pools are distributed for next year, there isn't relegation in mixed.

Seems like a lot of extra games for not much. It would have been better to have tie breaker games before the championship round instead of the way they broke those ties.
