Thanks for the heads up. Quote button still not working. Remove or Fix/maybe. Should be a great event. What's at stake? .... besides money and points.

Does anyone know why Alison Flaxey's team seems to be playing without her?

Don't know about Ali "White Shoes" Flaxey but the shocker at The Masters is SUPER-MONSTER Rachel Homan getting dropped two in a row. Hopefully she hasn't come down with a bad case of "Rowdy Ronda Rousey' syndrome. She's not only getting beat - she's getting beaten bad.
Val Sweeting, another top monster continued her wobbly trek toward the Olympic trials - getting dropped by the very spotty Kerri Einarson in 6 ends last nite.
Now, one has to couch all these "upsets" by virtue of most of the top squads (Jones, Homan, Sweeting, etc.) NOT WANTING to peak too early. Just how do you lose on purpose - and how does that help you get to peak abilities at the Trials?
Suspect most of these teams are trying to patch up team weaknesses (except Jones who will play the same way until she's done curling). Should be pointed out the main faults on Team Sweety and Team Homan are at skip where Val turned in a miserable 44%'r last night vs. Einarson.
If the Big 3 continue to struggle this really opens the door for the next level - ie. Einarson, Rocque, Middaugh, possibly Harrison, Lawton, Flaxey, Spencer.

Looks like possibly a few surprises with HOMAN, Sweeting, Englot on the verge of missing playoffs.

i dont know whats going on with rachel. they used to have the loss here and there in smaller events but them then at the slams you could almost write them into the playoffs. gone 2-6 in slams this year

jen makes the semis but she is not the force she once was. vulnerable to really anyone right now

sweeting has totally fallen off since their hot start and englot and flaxey have struggled all season

if these inconsistencies persist the trials will be really interesting and the door might be open for someone like einarson or scheidegger.

men are similar gushue looks good but not unbeatable. koe and carruthers are heating up after slow starts.

epping's been the biggest disappointment this season. im more convinced than ever this teams time is done after the season. where once i saw this team good enough to dominate ontario for years after howard last season ended poorly. this year they are yet to even make a final and are leaking steals against them. a bad trials and/or failure to win ontario again will seal the deal and im not sure anything can change that

McEwen has to shake the rap of being able to confront his arch-nemesis Brad Jacobs. Perhaps this weekend?
Gushue still look super-strong - but there's always a pack of fierce rabbits trying to dethrone the City of Goo.
Like misty says - whats wrong with Rachel? Perhaps the team is taking this 'peaking at the right time' thing too seriously - wanting to almost avoid early season conquests.
That's usually Jones job - trying to build for a peak - and while she managed to slither by American junior Jamie Sinclair this afternoon - she'll be sorely tested by the up 'n coming Swedish monster squad in Hasselborg. You never know with Jen - she could come up super big and challenge Anna - or just pass out and collect her semi-finalist cheque.
Sweeting has been super miserable - especially Val. Can she find form by Trials or will she be surpassed by some eager rabbits --- like Rocque & Einarson.
Actually Einarson looks like the most consistent of the Canadian teams - and she's had a couple horrid outings, yet seems to bounce up after a disaster. That's the sign of a tough team.
Paetz & Tirinzoni are unquestionably the 2 top swiss teams - and really when you think about it - both Top 5 in world (based on results, nothing else)

My World Top 5 Women right now:

1. Homan (body of work)
2. Paetz (mentally tough skip, really good shot-makers)
3. Hasselborg (most athletic squad, some issues closing games by Anna)
4. Eve Muirhead - should be higher but the regular knock on Eve is she brings a less than stellar group to the party. Its true!
5. Savannah Tirinzoni (a consistent performer all over the world)

After the TOP 5

Jones, Einarson, Rocque, Harrison, Carey, rounding out the top 10.

Jones doesn't seem to be generating the great percentages she's known for - so her quest for another world title is next to impossible. I think she'd rather get herself another Olympic appearance - but if Homan reports in form she'll be tough to hurt. Besides there's no question now Emma Miskew is the pre-eminent 3rd in the world. When Rachel goes soft - Emma carries that team on her back. Jones rarely allows the same for Lawes.

ML, I just looked, Jen is one of two teams at 5-0. Two wins were over Paetz and Tirizoni, so your ratings don't seem all that rational.

My Top 5 isn't based on this event - more like last year and a half..... Jones couldn't even escape Manitoba last year!

Do my eyes deceive me - Jones prolly hasn't scored a 7-ended unless she was playing fawns at St. Vital??? Anyways, Anna got 2 back, now 8-3 JJ playing 4 - this should go down to last rock as Jones has a very nasty habit of allowing leads to evaporate; especially vs. a world class team like the athletic swedes!

Tirinzoni rolled through the Swiss Olympic trials undefeated including wins over Paetz, and thus Paetz ranks three spots higher, ML ?

Other than Homan when she's firing on all cylinders the world's Top 6 to 8 are pretty close. Heck even Anna Sidorova doesn't merit Top 8 anymore. I'd say the Swiss #3 team (Feltscher) is better.
Fabulous that we have a Winnipeg vs. Winnipeg final at the Grand Slam.
Jones really carved up some turkeys this go-round while Einarson toppled a bunch of hot teams - ie Homan, Sweeting.

Who knows what the final holds. One would have to favour JJ - cuz Einarson & Selena K kinda look up to her as the goddess of Manitoba curling. But I think that's wearing off. Einarson is now a more solid shooter than Val Sweeting, Shannon Kleibrink, perhaps even Krista McCarville. The big concern is at 3rd where Selena Kaatz, who has incredible on-ice demeanour is still not in the same league as top 3rds like Miskew, Lawes & Olson-Johns.
I do know one thing - Einarson's baby-faced lead, Kristin McCuish has become an elite lead - thru hard work, training, paying attention and cool demeanour.

That said, JJ should win fairly easily - or Einarson will give Jones & Co. one heckuva dogfight! Look forward to it!

dont watch as much curling as i did once

- curious what the viewer stats are now

havent seen any for years

the endless commercials slow down the game for sure

but edin babbling in swedish is akin to grunting in tennis - pretty disgusting and also cheating as they are fluent in english

its on in the next room and downstairs - but likely wont watch 5 shots

just an opinion

why do they speak " their native tongue " ??

in a country that allows them to play and make a living ..

they speak english in the cafeteria and when not on the ice - attend some events in person and you will see

its to gain an unfair advantage

wont miss him

dont favor hijabs, long hair , ugly beards , women squealing sweep, and many other habits which i will list if we get into a discussion

so stupid - now we have to make a rule to speak English?

I don't need to go to any events, I don't care what they speak, it is not like it is a secret what they are trying to do. Any knowledgeable curler can figure it out.

Take some classes in speech from other countries.

I seem to remember Quebec team speaking English and French in both the Scottie's and Brier. Are they breaking the rules lmao!

language

Maybe the Canadian teams need to learn our native languages like Mi'kmaq or Inuit to speak in code so no other country can't understand our strategy?
Glooscap even has a curling club named after him.
Seriously..

The Winnipeg Grand Slam final was something less than awe-inspiring. Both teams were tight and the low percentages reflected it. Jones almost looks defiant - openly not wanting to peak too early - but here we go - SHE WINS ON LAST ROCK - UP 2 AND NEEDS TO STICK FACING 3.
Best performer might have been the normally average Selena Kaatz (Einarson 3rd) but the other 7 players were average at best.
Homan when she's firing on 7 or 8 cylinders would have minced either of the Winnipeg teams today - even Val Sweeting would go over.
Jones will need a ton of help at the Trials to even get to the final game showdown (probably vs. Homan) but she's seriously hyper and high-strung like never before. Too much discussion with her team on basic shots (which drain the clock) but I guess that's now her process.
Einarson may have mowed down some folks who's play was less than stellar - but she's a comer. Still trying to find a definitive team style - but she's as good a thrower of the stone as Sweeting, Jones, Rocque, etc. Not quite as grooved or powerful as Homan - but who the hell is?

Unusual that Homan was not at this slam, as she likely would have won it all.

Ajay, Homan was at this slam. Her team only won once in the round robin, failing to qualify for the playoffs.
