Olympic Mixed Doubles

Game one going on currently...

So...let's talk.

US Up on Olympians who are Russian, but not playing as Russic 5-2 in the 5th...and possibly poised to steal more, with the help of a burned OAFR stone.

Worst....last end...ever...

US gives up a 6 (keep in mind, you only deliver 5 stones in mixed doubles) to let the swiss win.

That's after giving up a steal, with their own powerplay...

i still think they can medal. they got the arguably 2 of the best 3 teams in the field out of the way early. they'll be favorites against korea and finland.

china is struggling.

really norway is the only one i'd say they won't be favored to win or have a good shot

Wow, the equivalent of an 8 ender. First one I've seen, wouldn't want to be in that changeroom afterwards.

So now the Americans own the honor of being on the bad end of the largest scoring ends in Olympic history, 6 in mixed doubles and 7 in team (women’s in 2014).

That was a winnable game. Anyone else think that the statistician were generous to Matt?

Well unless KOR completely melts down the US will be sitting at three loses and essentially have to win out to make a tiebreaker or playoff.

Watching the Hamiltons' body language during the Korea match last night, it looked like it suddenly hit both of them that they were at _THE OLYMPICS_ and that pressure imploded them. With no other teammates or previous Olympic experience to draw strength from, that game got away from them really early.

Now that the rest of Team USA is there and the opening ceremony's complete, maybe some pep talks from teammates can put them back together again? I think they probably can to a point. Whether that'll be enough to catch the top 4 teams in the standings, I seriously doubt though.

There's still a road to the Playoffs...but it's perilously thin.

the US has to run the table, with games against China, Norway, and Finland remaining...The Norway game is a stretch.

That would get them to 4-3.

Fortunately, all of the teams ahead of them have to cannibalize each other down the stretch. There are six losses that have to be parcelled out between RussianButNotRussia, Canada, Switzerland, Norway, and Korea, as there are six games left between those five teams.

Korea controls their own destiny, with matches left against NotRussia, Switzerland, and Canada. frankly, however, I think they are likely to finish 2-5.

The US Needs Norway to lose against either Finland (not likely) or China (maybe). If that happens, the US would be tied with them at 4 wins for the 4th spot. And the US would control the H2H tiebreaker by virtue of their game 6 win.

Another possible route comes if NotRussia goes 0-2 in their matches against Canada and Switzerland (or wins one of those and loses to Korea), as the US controls that tiebreaker as well.

Basically, there's still roads...but step one is winning out. Well...step 1 is getting past China.

Arrrgh... For ONCE I'd like to see a USA curling team do half-decent at the Olympics!!!

It's been too many years of fanboy frustration. I might need to get me to the local curling club for a drink.

I still think the US will do half-decent or better in the full team games.

My personal bet is Nina Roth's team will finish somewhere between 4th and 6th in the standings, similar to how she did in the Worlds last year. (5th)

John Shuster's team has been very good lately, and he seems to have Edin's number. If he can scratch into the playoffs and into a match-up with Edin, I think he likely wins it, meaning either a silver or a bronze. I don't see him taking down Kevin Koe, though.

So...step one fail...

I just hope they can shake it off before the real curling begins in a few days.
