Costly Loss at Worlds

Interesting comments coming out of a recent podcast that suggested Curling Canada lost half a million dollars in funding last season when Chelsea Carey missed the podium at the Worlds in 2016.

http://2girlsandagame.libsyn.com/me...st-gerry-geurts

It said it came from a Curling Canada official, would be interesting to hear where this was said or how it came out in public? That's a serious cut to funding just for missing the medals in one year.

"Own the podium", the organization that determines sports funding, no longer tolerates the "8th is ok" mentality. You want money? Then you'd better medal! Carey didn't, Curling Canada paid the price. Just ask other sporting organization...I.e. Synchronized Swimming.

I'm about as big a critic of Chelsea Carey and her band of feisty 3rd teams as there is.

BUT THIS ONE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CHELSEA.

Sure, she couldn't medal. It was a good field and Chelsea was definitely over-matched vs. the mighty swiss.

One on one she can't stand up to Eve Muirhead and the advantage Canadian teams usually have over Eve is better team overall. Last year, Feisty Amy & Sloan were basically on the same level.

The Russians played a fantastic game for the bronze - Chelsea could have quit after bowing out in the semi-final but played a decent bronze game - Sidorova was just a tad better.

Even the Mighty JONES couldn't make it to the worlds - not her best event anyways as she went 2 and out in the STOH playoffs.

R Homan couldn't even make it to the nationals as she was pushed off the ledge by legendary Jenn Hanna at the Ontario playdowns.

Homan would have been a heavy favourite to medal (at least bronze) while Jones is so mercurial she could have tapped out no matter what her round-robin record was. History says she's about 60% to medal - - - - Homan would have been more like 90%.

After that and considering the good world field - I don't think any other Canadian womens team is more than 33# to medal - ie. Einarson, Rocque, McCarville, Sweeting, Larouche, etc. Englot, curling the way she did the majority of the year would have been a 50/50 bet for silver or bronze, 5% for gold.

You really are too harsh on Jones, they are the 2nd best team in the world, so yes, they have a great chance to medal at any event they play, Sweeting are the 4th best team, so they too have a very good chance, the only international teams who have a good chance to medal are Tirinzoni, Muirhead and Hasselborg IMO, if any of those Canadian teams I mentioned are in the event, Flaxey and Scheidegger are looking good too, they will have a good chance to medal. Of course Homan has the best chance to medal.

They finished 4th, not 8th.

Yeah, but it's quite a leap between 4th and 8th, you'd think playing for a bronze would be good enough.

thats never gonna happen.

the good thing i thing about the top international teams coming over is that they are getting better. by them getting better it forces the canadians to push themselves to get better. top teams need access to each other in order to improve . the risk of complacency is real if they dont

Yea..and the stock market will never fall and the Leafs will never make the playoffs. Pretty short sighted view!

International sport is about winning. The rest of the world has figured that out which is why they play here not in their own countries.

Win and get grants.....lose and get nothing...I don't agree with the system but I do recognize it.

If one fourth place finish resulted in a loss of $500,000, two undefeated records and two golds this year must have resulted in $3,000,000 or more increase one would think?

From what I have read in several posts related to world curling it is clear that Canadians/curlers haven't got a clue of how the funding works or what the real costs are. Olympic funding comes only with winning. The costs of winning are high. As to CCA losing $500K in funding, who cares, they don't properly administer what they get anyway. As to blaming players for loosing, no player goes in a Spiel with the intent to lose and CCA should be penalized for their comments. This is what clubs pay $2.00 a member for? Quit sending those cheques and maybe CCA attitudes will change.

Well unfortunately there is a belief that the game and sportsmanship are the main factors in sport. Professional sport is about money and winning. Olympic/world sport is even blacker as it is about prestige, winning and the politics of both.

There has probably been more cheating and dangerous practice at the world sport (like doping athletes) than at professional sport. The Sport Ministry of all countries is a pay for performance bureau. Canada is no different, just not as good at it!

Too bad it is this way but you can't ignore reality. If you want the money to compete you better be winning.

Well it's a good thing curling is not a pro sport then isn't it.
