HUGE turnout from the GNCC as usual. A few regions close today so this may change but here are the numbers so far. Looks like GNCC men and women should be playing for two slots since AK is closed with no teams in either field.
(*close 12/13)

Region M W
AK 0 0
Dakota* 7 1
GLCA* 8 0
GNCC 17 6
IL* 1 0
MACA 5 0
MN* 3 2
MOPAC 12 4
WA 2 1
WI* 15 3

Good for the GNCC, MOPAC and Wisconsin. I'm not sure why the rest of the country has such a dismal turnout. Minnesota with three Men's teams? Illinois with 1 team, again why aren't they in the GLCA? No business with a one team auto berth.

The USCA needs to take a look at the structure of this competition. Wisconsin and the GNCC have a tough competition to qualify 2, maybe 3 teams while Illinois is sign and go and Washington will have a two team interclub playoff.

On another note, is it true Ardsley is closing?

70 Teams competing for the national Clubs title on the Men's side

17 on the Women's side.

Both of those exceed the number of teams competing for US Open Nationals...the Men's side quite dramatically.

I concur that something needs to be looked at with the structure of these tournaments.

Good news, I should never trust the scuttlebutt from those Illinoisans.

Glad to see excellent participation after last year, I think it’s clear that the location of club nationals influences participation numbers.

Is the women’s qualifier decided by the round robin or is there a playoff?

Dawn Findlay's team and Stephanie Erstad's team finished the women's event round robin tied for first. There are two slots for GNCC women, so they decided that their game at Nationals will be the final.

Bill Stopera and Benj Guzman on the men's event might have decided to do the same.

Talk about going against the spirit of the game. That's like a smack in the face to past GNCC champions... It's not even worth playing the game to be a champion? Is this just a coastie attitude? I couldn't imagine this flying in Minnesota/ND/Wisconsin/Seattle...

What's the point of playing in club's then? You don't go to worlds, so should they just tie the national championship game too?

Everybody is a winner! Yay!

What a disgrace...

In fact, all four teams are past GNCC Champions and we all agreed to the plan, so you can worry about something else.

SO you speak for all past champions? Give me a break with that flawed logic.

I'm not sure it is a "disgrace", but certainly disappointing and against the spirit of competition.

All those teams signed up, they deserve a conclusion.

They've got a conclusion...

The two teams from each gender who advanced advanced.

It's not like GNCC Men's Club's is the GNCC Men's Championship event (that would be the Gordon Emmett bonspiel).

GNCC Club Play downs exists to qualify teams for Club Nationals...they played to that point, that's all that needs to be done.

There's nothing in the rules that says "Tiebreakers must be played immediately"....both genders agreed to do it in a couple of months at another venue....what's wrong with that?

Hardly.

Regions you mentioned are all compact, by comparison. Hell, the Washington region is effectively just one club.

Many competitors in GNCC need to fly. For them, an extra game on Sunday evening means an extra day off work. Staring down a no-expense-paid trip for a week+ to beautiful Brainard makes that even less palatable.

The champion will ultimately be decided on the ice. So past GNCC champs can rest comfortably.

And yes, this is the coastie attitude. Pragmatic, and not doing things just because that's the way they have always been done.

If there are so many regions, year after year, that are unable to field even a single team fro nationals, then the system is broken. Now that would be a valid focus of your ire.

GNCC is doing just fine.

The tiebreaker game has occurred...team Findlay defeated team Erstad 10-6 in the Round Robin, thereby settling the trophy.

And look, no one died....no one has lost anything, all is well.

So...nonexistant problem solved.
