numbers players are wearing at Grand Slam
We have noticed for a few years now, that the players in certain curling events have a number on their shirts and jackets - for example John Epping is wearing 72 at the Players Grand Slam on now. What is the reason for these numbers? Hope someone can tell me. thanks

I've heard a few discussions about this.
What I gather, is it is just personal choice. Bringing the sport in line with other pro sports. Also TV might have something to do with it. I remember all of the rationale to be kind of forced, but it does no harm. Hoping @Gerry will also respond. Seems there was one other reason/theory thrown about.

The numbers serve no purpose whatsoever aside from the misguided belief of a few that the souvenir crazed curling fan will pay desperately to own his/her copy of their favorite players jacket.
Curling is not a fast paced, multiple substitution team sport where players faces are hidden by helmets or hats and numbers help spectators identify athletes. The numbers have been used for a couple box years now and curling fans chuckle at the teams that employ them.
Time to throw them out before an entire team uses 69 or something ridiculous like π.

I think the first curling team to use numbers was Glenn Howard's team. Each player wore the number of his favorite hockey player. For Glenn Howard, it was 4 for Bobby Orr.

There is no reason other than the players trying to bring an extra "cool" factor to curling, and each player chooses their own number simply based on personal preference. I've always found them a bit odd, but I don't mind them.

Didn't the WCt feel it would help "brand" players for the tv audience? Just in case you couldn't tell the difference between Martin and Morris!

Yes this actually was the rrason. Its a way to identify the players easier in the larger venues.

yes they are for branding/marketing and the slams started it. this weekend also marked the significance of the kickoff for procurlingwear by kobe fuzion sportswear and if your team is wearing kobe produced uni s you will be able to buy a jersey at very reasonable pricing somewhere in the 50 dollar range i believe. hoping team jacobs amongst others jump on board with kobe and they d be the next jersey i purchase. no publicity is bad.

Publicity that makes you a laughingstock in the sports world is bad. Maybe PGA and pro tennis players need numbers in their backs too...
I can also get my own, high quality team uniforms locally for far less than $50.00 each.

Plus another thought; if these numbers are so important to identify the player throwing the third set of stones (because curling fans are illiterate and can't read a program), why doesn't the CCA use them in large venue events?
Because they don't need to, the sport doesn't need them nor require them. That's why.

I'm an idiot? Lol! An attack from someone who can't spell, punctuate or create a legible sentence-let alone an intelligent argument.
You are, though, an excellent target market example. Better go snap up some of those numbered jerseys!

Nothing is more uncool than trying purposely to be cool.
Being cool is being real, not phoney.
It was pretty cool when Howard's team was the first to do this with the relatively small numbers paying homage to their favourite NHLers. Now that everyone is doing it, it just looks plain silly.

They are only doing it because it is a WCt rule for slams.

The numbers are a bit of good old fashioned understated Canadian humour.
Of course they aren't needed. That's the whole point.
Whiners and humourless fools can't be pleased no matter what, so there is no point in trying.

The real reason for the number on shirts
We are watching the men's final and we have decided that the numbers are on the shirts so that curling fans have something to talk about and debate during the commercial breaks! Happy Easter everyone!!

Guess what? Two years on and the numbers still look ridiculous on a four person team. And, Btw, non-curlers are laughing at you.
