Good discussion here. Throwing in my $0.02:

I'm 31 and began curling at 18. If I didn't go to Bowling Green, where they have their own ice on campus, I may never have been introduced to the sport.

I still play because growing up I tried so many different sports. I wasn't very good at them. The competitors were VERY competitive and oftentimes condescending or cruel when I failed. That never happened with curling. I'm halfway decent on a good day, and everyone's super nice win or lose.

A big reason people don't join, I think, based on those I've tried to indoctrinate, is it's such a commitment time-wise and financially. People like golfing or playing tennis once in a while, but at their leisure, not every week. You can't really do that with this sport.

But it's a great sport for those who, say, moved to a new city and don't know anybody. People see it on the Olympics as a sport, but don't realize it's actually a social club.

In terms of drawing new members, curling clubs generally don't advertise well. They don't target specific groups. They just sort of put the invitation out there in the newspaper or social media.

Word of mouth is great but I think they need to target specific entities, like local high schools or businesses for company outings. Target women's groups. Target minority groups. The large base of curlers are older white males, and as a result the sport feels like an old guy's game.

If you live in a place with a university or more than one start a university league.
We did and it is very successful.
its is:
- Sunday evening at 7 so it ends while public transit still runs
- it is draw from board (no fixed teams) so out of town participants don't have to look for curlers since they are unfamiliar with the local curling scene.
- draw from the board also makes it more flexible to cater to exams, essay deadlines etc
- the students love curling with different people each week so they get to make new friends
- devise a point system so all get points even if they lose
- let non curling students play but give them a few weeks of instruction while rest of league plays
- have it run by the students
- make it affordable but ensure it covers costs or more
- set up your club fee structure so there is a way students can migrate to other leagues because lots will
- get one or more of the students to set up social media platforms such as Facebook so students have a central point of contact
We attract about 40 to 50 players each season

I'll try to say this as quickly as possible, no one likes a wall of text.

-28, watched curling seriously for about 4 years

-GF noticed how much I watched and suggested I actually try it

-Asked friends team if any room, but it was a long-running team they didnt want to mess with,, and not enough other friends interested to start a 2nd team with over the past 2 years.

-Went to a try curling event at the Heather about 6 weeks agoand liked it a lot once again. Had trouble finding a team for a few weeks after that though, started emailing a lot of clubs in the Winnipeg area

-Found a great team to take me on Weds at the Thistle for the past 3 weeks and have loved it so far!

-Also found another team at the Heather for Fridays now so will be jumping on there, at the original club that held the clinic to try it.

Not sure how small of a minority I would be, but my interest came from watching on tv and finally trying it at an open clinic.

I guess a big hinderance was trying to find a team, either from my friends or just looking around.

I'm 29, and we are trying a Beer, Pizza, and Curling Night this Saturday at 9pm at Ching in Brampton. For $20, you get a mini lesson on the basics of curling, 6 ends of curling, and Beer & Pizza for anyone Under 35. Meant to encourage experienced younger curlers to bring out their friends/family of similar age to come out and try curling in a fun atmosphere. Hopefully it goes well...open to anyone who would like to come out!
