She was one of the very best, and some would argue the best of all time. Sad to see her go but wish her the best with her life after curling

Love the rock-star era of Team Norberg. Classy. Tough. A leader. Will watch for you to eat up the senior circuit when you get there, Anette, if you still have the drive. Thanks for the inspiration.

I suspect Norberg took that into account before hanging up the slider. If Cici isn't ready now, she might never be.
Norberg was never really a dominant technical curler with a variety of shots to kill opponents with. What she was - a plodding, veteran type personality who rarely wavered, made key shots at key times and knew how to win most of her important games.
In a Ford Hotshot competition I'd venture to say she'd finish weak compared to say Rachel Homan, Susan O'Connor, Jennifer Jones, Alison Kreviazuk, Kaitlyn Lawes, etc. The curler most like her now is Mirjam Ott, who seems to get things done despite deficiencies.
Anette's greatest strength was never her shot making. It was her incredible mental strength and strategy. Her team could be getting out done all the way through in shooting percentage but she'd still be winning the game because often times she'd be running circles around the opponent in strategy.

100% AGREE!
No more proof need be offered than the last Olympic games where Canada sent one of its weakest teams ever, Cheryl Bernard and yet Bernard had Norberg totally on the ropes for most of that game - before choosing a very inappropriate time to poop herself, that short mini-double where she threw back line weight and ended up serving up gold to Annette and her crew. Perhaps Annette was so good at strategy she set up the situation fully knowing Bernard could not handle the pressure and weight required to successfully execute.
She wasnt out curling sweden the entire way. Sweden definately out played canada through the first 6 ends
the turning point was the 7th

One of the toughest curlers mentally ever! To beat her and her team you had to finish the deal. Just ask Bernard and Holland how tough that was to do! Best of luck Annette.

I think you have to rule out Andrea. She's not really mentally tough anymore..she's let a ton of games slip away
If im nominating anyone then im throwing in Dordi Nordby. I dont think you can go through history and find anyone who's mental toughness and strategy were more important. Dordi was definately not the most skilled shot maker in the world, even at her peak. But she has great strategy and that often is what won games for her..its what allowed her to stick around for so long at the top and get medals well into her career.
Dordi might be the one curler id put ahead of anette in terms of mental strength.

So you judge her whole career by how mentally tough she is at 50 years old. She had to carry mostly patchwork teams on her back, since she was such a volatile leader she had a hard time keeping teams or any players with her (except periodically Wagner). She had to be super mentally tough.

I think part of the reason you often lowball Schopp is you seem to be a big Dordi Norby fan (which is fine, she was a great player with a great personality who had good battles with Canadas best) and Schopp was probably her biggest personal rival considering how often they played over the years, especialy in Europe and European events, and that their general rank in greatness is quite similar (unlike say Gustaffson or Norberg who also played Norby alot but are way ahead). It is worth reminding that Schopp actually has 2 World titles, an Olympic Gold, and 7 European titles vs Norby who has 2 World titles, only a single Olympic silver (due to losing to Schopp in the finals) and a mere 2 European titles. Schopp in fact has the superior record despite that you regularly rank Norby higher on all time lists I see on this forum. One could argue Norby winning back to back is more impressive, but Schopp at her peak from 86-92 won Worlds, Olympics, was runner up in 2 other Worlds, and medalled in a 5th Worlds or Olympics. Her 2010 World title many years after her prime suggests her longevity is even superior to Norby, especialy considering Norby did not come close to winning a Worlds after her 2 peat (made 2 finals and got spanked badly in both).
Mostly though Norby also has the benefit of teammates. She had a very strong team of players who stayed together for many years, and formed a strong unit. Give Norby the patchwork teams Schopp had for years, where her best teammate was "usually" the gawky throwing Moninka Wagner (when Wagner was even with her which wasnt always) and see what she would have achieved. What Schopp achieved given her dysfunctional and usually not very skilled or experienced teams, and all the obstacles she faced was merkable. Prior to the 2002 Olympics she was removed from her own team by the coach, since her own team grew to hate her and her bullying style so much.
I know this thread has turned into a mental toughness debate but would also add Andrea is a way superior technical thrower with a way better hitting game than Norby by a huge margin. I saw her play a game against the GOAT Sandra Schmirler at the 1997 Worlds where Andrea's team (besides her) played absolutely terrible, were missing everything, and she herself won the game with amazing shotmaking. She almost pulled off the same thing at the 98 Olympics where her team were playing dreadful all event and were shooting in the 50% range vs Schmirler but she put them up 4-2 midway through with amazing angle raises and hits. Dorbi could never have done that on her own against such opponents with her team playing like that. She just doesnt have the shooting prowess to that extent to pull that off.
