I'm in love with a new Belmont Stakes bomb today. My pick still remains Destin, but I need to spread the love around a little bit.

Charles Fipke is a Canuck. He owns diamond mines. Not a bad job, if you can get it. His favorite trainer is the unconventional Dallas Stewart. Stewart is the trainer with the upset specials that make exactas pay big. 2013 Golden Soul 2nd in The Derby...2014 Commanding Curve 2nd in The Derby...2015 Tale of Verve in the Preakness. (2 of those owned by Fipke) What does he have in order to make it four years in a row?

Dallas Stewart has Forever d'Oro. This colt finally won a race a couple of weeks ago (going long at Churchill for a very good purse and as the favorite). He is the son of Medaglia d'Oro who had no problems going long. His mother is Forever Lemons, daughter of stamina sire Lemon Drop Kid. Forever Lemons was a very good filly going long. She won the Kentucky Oaks.

So the Canuck diamond miner and the trainer who enters any horse into anything are set to shock the racing world again.

IF you like to play the occasional longshot in the hopes of a big payday, I'd box Forever d'Oro in your trifecta and exacta. I'd also use Destin, Brody's Cause and (maybe) Lani.

Sectional Qualfiying starts today for one of the only National Championships truly deserving of the title...the US Open of Golf.

Wanna play? Great, all you have to do is meet the entry criteria (1.4 or less USGA handicap) and enter a local qualifier. That is unless you have already qualified under one of the other exemptions, all of which are earned on the course. Some of those got you to today's stage (Sectionals). Some get to go all the way to the tourney directly...but not one was chosen by a committee (well...okay...there are occasional wildcards granted, but those are almost always due to exceptional circumstances)

From those Sectionals, someone *will* qualify for the US Open. Several someones in fact. 22 qualified last year (the exact number depends on entries from the other criteria, but it's guaranteed to be at least 20).

And the best part...once they hit the links in a couple of weeks, all are equal.

With an obscure reference to the HPP, Alan is banned from ramblings until after the Belmont.

Unless he gives us the winner, exactor and tri.

JH
Tuck told us Destin for the Derby, yeah, not so much

Oh, that's easy...the winners will be the folks who don't bet...

With this field, it's a complete Wargames situation...the only winning move is not to play.

But, if I was betting my ability to draw to the 4 foot against 6 (which is a VERY small bet...), I'm going for Suddenlybreakingnews, Exaggerator, and jhcurl and tuck in a horse outfit for the show...

Saturday's card at Belmont is more than just the Belmont Stakes. The entire day looks a lot like the Breeders' Cup. Some very good horses going on Friday as well.

I'm skipping some great races and starting with Race 6 because this is a ton of work to handicap them and type them.

Jaipur Stakes turf sprint for $300,000 (the headline event for most days at every track...a minor warmup for this day)

6 Rocket Heat gets the early lead because he will always get the early lead because he is wicked fast. Lots of speed in this race and he will have company. Then he will fade.

3 Ready For Rye catches him first and goes on to win. 2 Alot finishes hard from back in the pack to get second. For those wanting a longshot for their exotic wagers, the 12 Commute is a very good closer in a field of sprinters and could pay really big.

3, 2 and 9. The 8 Mosler is scary and the 5 Disco Partner is a live bomb, but those are my three.

Race 7 $500,000 Woody Stephens 7 furlong sprint for 3 year old colts.

Many will like Tom's Ready who is just off the Derby Trail where he did OK. I don't like him here. Again, a ton of early speed...so a closer like Tom's Ready could have the race fall into his lap...but I'm betting others.

10 Imperial Hint will get the lead, but he won't last.

1 Sharp Azteca was brilliant winning the Pat Day Mile on Derby Day and I'll use him, but remember that Competitive Edge was absolutely-record-setting-brilliant in the Pat Day and then lost this one (I still think he was sick)

I like the undefeated California colt 4 Justin Squared. He's quick and his workouts tell me that he's ready.

Both my 1 and my 4 are favorites. Sorry. If you like a bomb to make stuff pay well, my pick would be the 7 Counterforce. If it sets up for a closer, I prefer him to Tom's Ready. The 3 Dig Deep is pretty good as well.

4, 1 and 7 for me.

Kinda wimpy favorite picks in the first two featured races, but I'm no chalk eater. Next is the Just A Game turf mile for mares. Really good field racing for a $700,000 purse.

The favorite is likely to be 7 Mrs. McDougal. I'm not a big fan and I probably won't be using her on many tickets. I much prefer the 2 Recepta and the 8 Celestine at much longer odds. My pick, however, is a double-digit bomb 9 Irish Rookie. She's done very well in Group Stakes in Europe and those are better fields than even this one.

So 9, 2 and 8 for Race 8.

For casual fans who might be in a spot where you could place a bet or two, it's easy. Go to the window and say (for this race) "Belmont. Race 8. $2 Exacta Box. 2, 8 and 9." Then hand the guy $12. That's assuming you can afford to lose $12. If you can't, don't take horse picks from a dirt farmer. If you can and win, leave a couple bucks in the tip jar after a win.

The famous Met Mile is Race 9 for $1,250,000. Nice field, but not a great field.

I guess I go back to picking the favorites in this one. The 4 Noble Bird is a nut-job who doesn't run a lick half the time...and runs a hole in the wind the other half? Which Noble Bird will show up? I think the nut-job, but I can't bet against him.

My pick will be the 5 Frosted who is simply the class of the field. The problem is: His last race was in Dubai, halfway around the globe. Horses shipping back from Dubai have shown that they need a race to get back to top form in North America. From his workouts, I think Frosted is an exception to this rule.

So those are chalky boring favorites. I also like 13 Marking at a slightly better price. He's also back from Dubai. The 3 Donworth looks to have all the talent in the world but never wins. The 6 Upstart was on the Derby Trail last year and has a legit shot at huge odds. The 11 Calculator is awfully good but has been racing mostly shorter races.

5, 4 and 13 for me. 3, 6 and 11 for those braver souls.

Since I won't be anywhere to bet the undercard I will tell you the Belmont winners.

Horses that skip the Preakness after running the Derby have won the Belmont 8 of the last 16 Belmonts. That peaked my attention and put me back on Tuck's favorite Destin. So here are my exacta and tri. 4 horses, just don't know the amount yet.

2 Destin
4 Suddenbreakingnews
11 Exaggerator
13 Creator

Box both the exactor and the trifector. Might throw a wheel with Exaggator on top for tri if I am up at craps. Will be placing this tomorrow at the casino.

Phils are starting to show their form, #1 pick in the draft

Exactor and trifector sound so Canadian to me.

My Twins are going to get the first draft pick.

Race 10 Manhattan Stakes 1 1/4 turf

One of the best horses in all the world has moved to New York City. His name is Flintshire and he is the 10. I like to see a Beyer number of over 100 and most of this sterling field has that...he has 114. I like to see a E-speed figure of over 110 and most of them have that...he has an insane 132 and seldom races here to get a number.

Flintshire has won huge races. He was second in last year's l'Arc de Triomphe. Last time in North America, he smoked the field in Saratoga's Sword Dancer Stakes.

To make matters worse, he will get Lasix for the first time. First time Lasix is always a good extra edge as horses tend to improve...sometimes vastly.

IF (and it's a shaky IF) I can get even money, I'll be betting him. Even money is sometimes good value. IF I can get 2 to 1, I'll bet him heavy. It is far more likely that he'll be 1 to 2 odds-on.

If you want to take a shot against him in the Pick 3 or Pick 4, I'd recommend the four-year-olds in the race. Maybe they can nip Flintshire because his best races are longer than this one. 1 World Approval is good and also improving. 11 Divisidero might even be better.

One possible upset scenario would focus on the 4 Take A Stand. He's the only horse entered here with any early speed (except maybe Grand Tito). IF they let Take A Stand get out to a good lead and he then relaxes, it is the equivalent of giving him a headstart. At 15 to 1 against Flintshire, you'll get paid if the improbable happens.

So just #10 for me. Those hunting for a big payday should consider 1, 4 and 11.

This is big change for turf racing in America. Big Blue Kitten, our best for the last few years, doesn't make my top plays. Ironicus, whose best races are a little shorter than this, doesn't make my list. A true changing of the guard; if I'm right. Only way this race might pay is for trifecta players to use the underrated 8 Triple Threat underneath Flintshire. Note that the 7 Oathkeeper is a first time gelding...also could make a trifecta pay. I won't play either. I'll just single Flintshire in multirace bets and spread elsewhere.

Ben Tucker (only the Belmont Stakes left and JHcurl is trying to steal my show)

After the $1,000,000 Manhattan, the big $1,500,000 Belmont Stakes.

When playing the ponies, I look for a vulnerable favorite. That's when the money can be made. As you can see, I like mostly favorites in Saturday's card. Here is a race where I see the favorite as vulnerable.

Exaggerator is the best horse in the field. However, his mother's side of the pedigree isn't conducive to 1 1/2 miles. Also, he tired and veered out badly at the end of his victorious Preakness. Also, he has had 3 draining races in a row and fresher colts will get a big edge on him...even if they lack his class.

So I am the heretic. I'll be playing against this son of Curlin (curlingzone's favorite horse).

I do like Destin to win. I'm just not sure how to play him.

Betting Destin in multirace wagers doesn't look great. I like favorites in most of them. The very expensive Belmont Pick 6 could pay well, even if tepid 5 to 1 horses win. I've cashed big on that before, but I'm not too sure about it this time. So very many good horses are scheduled to race. Picking that many in a row seems like a fool's errand. I, however, have played the fool many times before.

I think Exaggerator is SO vulnerable that he could easily finish out of the top four. So it the trifecta or superfecta the way to go? I don't think so because I have no idea who might fill out the slots.

I love Destin. I like Suddenbreakingnews and Brody's Cause. I think Forever d'Oro could get a piece at big odds. What do I do with the two sons of Tapit?

I don't trust the children of Tapit going over 1 1/8. Only Tonalist (winning this very race) has done much going long. Are Creator or Lani the next Tonalist? I don't know. Creator had a tough trip in the Kentucky Derby. His mother won going long in Peru...but how much stock do you put in Peru? Lani's dam won going very long in Japan. I do trust Japanese racing.

So if I do settle on a trifecta box, it might be Destin, Suddenbreakingnews, Forever d'Oro, Brody's Cause and Lani. Or I might key Destin with him winning and the other underneath him for the trifecta...maybe with Trojan Nation.

I do know this much. If Governor Malibu, Cherry Wine, Stradivari, Gettysburg, Seeking The Soul or Exaggerator win or even get second...I lose.

In the meantime, I have some farming to do. I need to give it more thought. Handicapping the races is only half the job. Structuring the bets is difficult unless you have enough money just to toss it around.

It doesn't look like a Bridge Jumper, but be aware of the pools.

"Bridge Jumper" races are when some people see a sure way to make some money in a very short amount of time. They will pick an obvious favorite and bet him/her very heavily to "show" (finish in the top three). Because it's the favorite, it usually only pays $2.10 on a $2 bet (for a net of 10 cents).

It doesn't seem like a big thing, but a rich guy can bet tens of thousands in the Show Pool. He can make over a grand in less than three minutes. They think it's like a money printing press. I think it's stupid.

It's called a Bridge Jumper because, should your horse somehow fail, you go to the nearest high bridge and jump off.

The reason to be aware of the Show Pool for possible Bridge Jumpers is that, when they are wrong, the Show bets pay off around 50 to 1.

So for instance: I think Exaggerator is tired and not bred for this distance and has a real chance of not hitting the top three. If I see the Show Pool explode, I will bet ALL to show (put down $2 on every horse NOT named Exaggerator to get third or better). If I'm right and the bridge jumpers are wrong, I make a lot of money without risking too much. If they are right, they get some money by risking a bunch.

Flintshire in Race 10 is far more likely to set off a Bridge Jumper scenario, but it could happen in the Belmont.

Dugless: HEY! I can't curl anymore and I live in a very rural area. I have to do something. It costs less than curling and is free when I'm at the top of my game. Do I dog your pastimes? No, I don't. People who slide (expletive) rocks on (expletive) ice should not judge others. Your sport is dumb.

I don't trust the New York City weather forecast, so I'm holding up on my bets.

That's a partial lie. I'm still not sure how to approach the day or even the race.

I did play today's Gold Cup/Belmont Stakes double with Destin and I did have the victorious Da Big Hoss. Don't be impressed. I also used Up With The Birds who finished exactly in the middle of the 13 horse field. The Will-Pay on the double is over $80 and I played it more than once. Maybe a good day tomorrow?

Is Destin this year's Keen Ice?

I liked Keen Ice last year and bet him often. Alas, he spent most of the year chasing far behind American Pharoah. I was right, however. Keen Ice did upset AP in the Travers Stakes. The exacta, trifecta and superfecta didn't pay much because the favorite finished second. The Pick 3 paid huge. The Pick 4 paid $10,000.

So how did I do on the year? Not good. Travers Day I was on the road to visit my new twin granddaughters. It was the only day I didn't bet him.

Such is life. I don't have tons of money, but I have more money than I have granddaughters (3). The granddaughters win every time. The important thing to me was that Keen Ice did live up to my expectations eventually. My nephew cashed big on the Pick 3 horses I gave him.

I don't mind chasing Destin a little bit until he proves me right or proves me wrong. For me, it's all about the mental exercise.

Scattered thunderstorms midday. Big Sandy drains well. Track should be good to fast by race time. Storms are moving through fast. BTW, Destin hates the slop.

Yes, you do bet the horses too much and I play too much poker. We both do it for the same reason, the rush. Of course, you have the advantage of sitting in a self-driving air conditioned tractor so you have time to study.

Hoping for a Destin win so that my winning bets don't lose money. At least I scored at craps today so my bets are free rolling.

Hoping to cash at poker tomorrow and then cash winning tickets

I'm all over the place. Worse; I'll probably cancel everything if rain hits.

I have a 5 horse trifecta box with Destin, Suddenbreakingnews, Forever d'Oro, Lani and Brody's Cause. I also have a trifecta bet with only Destin winning...those four...place Trojan Nation, Seeking The Soul and Creator.

Mostly I see opportunity in the Just A Game and the Belmont Stakes, so I'm hitting that Pick Four hard. Should Recepta, Celestine or Irish Rookie win and then someone other than Exaggerator win...could pay nice. Maybe. I hope.

Plus I have a tiny Pick Six. Too much money spread around, so I had to single Flintshire and Destin.

Too much horse stuff for a curling form. Just going on record with my picks.

Keeping it simple, the Phil special:

Governor Malibu, Lani, Exaggerator, Creator. Exacta/Trifecta/Superfecta (All $1 Boxed).

Work's been good lately, so playing around a bit. Rosario has been on fire as of late and has been so again so far today. So I threw in a keyed exacta box, Governor Malibu with all, and $5 to win. Did the same for Lani, simply because Lani is Lani and I wouldn't be surprised to see him win it all or come in dead last.

Well, 3 outta 4 ain't bad. Too bad close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

I figured Destin would be too rested, as many did. Guess we were wrong...I mean, he didn't win, but hell of a close finish.

For a minute I thought Rosario was going to come up the inside, but he couldn't make it happen.

Next up will be the Haskell. I think Nyquist runs in that. Then the Travers with who knows, maybe Exaggerator? Sets up the Breeders Cup Classic to be a race where money can be made. I think I might spend the day of the Breeders Cup in the race book, what could go wrong?

So this happened in the town next to Bridgeport where Nutmeg CC is located. I don't think they curl with us.

Serious rambling. Heading to Mohegan Sun on Thursday to hang out at the Barrett-Jackson car auction. Got my senior discount ticket today. Should be a lot of fun. Not buying of course but can't wait to wander around the staging area and see lots of really cool cars.

First time for the auction in the Northeast (or East). Heard that this is a five year contract.

Even Barrett-Jackson knows that Easties rule!

PPS I will scope out a mint Grand Marquis for The Punk

PPPS Don't think they will have a mint tractor with GPS for Tuck
