Summer Ramblings 2016

The Worlds is done. The Masters is over. Clubs are shutting off the ice. That can only mean one thing, time to RAMBLE.

What to talk about HPP, get out, go away. Summer spiels, sure have at it. The Derby, Le Tour, baseball, whatever floats your boat except serious curling crap.

Only 4 weeks until the Derby by the way. Based on the current odds there is money to made. Will not be a big favorite and the exacta could be 4 digit payoff. There is a son of Curlin running but only a good bet if the track is wet.

Early favorite in my book for Le Tour is Nairo Quintana.

Oh crap! We're not counting World Mixed Doubles? Oh, crap. I have to organize my Derby notes. (just kidding...my Derby notes are very organized)

We really need to start Summer Ramblings by getting Gerry to give us a poll:

Does Matt "Hammy" Hamilton's mustache remind you of:
A. Freddie Mercury, the dearly departed lead singer for Queen, or
B. An actor in a very, very low budget 1970's porn movie, or
C. What happens when you forget to empty your basement's mousetraps for year, or
D. Magnum, PI (OK, just kidding with D...nobody thinks he looks like Tom Selleck)

Hammy, as soon as you get home, pawn that World Bronze medal and buy yourself a razor. My aunt grows a better mustache. If you and Face cash in the late season stuff, you can get the medal out of hawk.

Ben Tucker (just kidding...it's the Rambling thread)

What, no one commenting on Speith pulling a MacNeill and snatching defeat from the jaws of certain victory?

I feel for the man...all I can say is I remember when I did something damned near as bad to lose a game...and I had a LOT less riding on it...and a LOT fewer cameras on me...and he still handled it a thousand times better than I did.

He's young and good looking and a multi-millionaire. The loss will haunt him all the way to his next big win a couple of months. Ah, the resiliency of youth...I miss it.

Of course, Misty could show up and call him a choker. I usually like it when Misty posts (especially about international Junior events), but she was way out of line on that stuff. Any curler who wins an Olympic berth for their nation in the pressure-cooker that is the Olympic Qualifying Event is forever granted immunity from the term "choker". It's like calling that young Texas golfer a choker...who already has his green jacket.

No, I'd rather talk about the dead mouse carcasses on Hammy's upper lip. (just kidding...Hammy can take it...he kids around a lot)

I hope lots of Canadians come down to join this thread and call our teams crap (he said sarcastically...as he bit his tongue...bit it hard...yep, I can taste blood...my tongue is bleeding, thanks Canada)

Alan, I have no time for this. The last Derby prep races are on Saturday and I need to have my stuff ready for a new thread on Sunday (so Jimboboogie can remind us that Northern Dancer was a Canadian)

Well, we have finally finished with our ice. Such a long season for the ice crew. I am over it.

Onto the Derby, check out the new thread started by Tuck.

Good luck to all those playing in Summer spiels. I need a long break away from ice. Of course as part of the ice crew, that means I get June off. Still lots of things to do at the club. Final cleanup, sending scraper blades to Canada for a vacation. We are also getting new rocks this year so moving a ton of granite out of the club and a new ton of granite into the club.

Next curling for me will be in Sept. Too much other stuff, horsies, TDF, baseball.

Time to bump this up. Will be at the Arena Nats this week. People that love to curl so much that they deal with skate and zamboni marks. Great that they get to curl on real ice for at least a bit. Good curling to all.

Amgen Tour of California starts soon. Brady Wiggins has his own team. Really, not BMC, not Cannondale but Team Wiggins. Dude, how much does that cost?

Lots of good US riders. Watch it on the "curling" channel, NBCSN. Starts on 5/15. Cannondale has a strong team with great young rider Lawson Craddock. They could be a force in the TDF.

Tour of California is underway. Here is a kid to watch (19 years old) for the future, Neilson Powless. He tried to steal the stage today and power up the only real climb in the event. Bonked but recovered to finish fifth. Riders at 19 don't do that, this kid will win Le Tour before he is 25. Cannondale and BMC are going to be forces in Le Tour this year. Both have strong teams.

So, who's excited for The Preakness?

(Silence)

Yeah, me neither. Looks like Nyquist is going to be tough to beat and a ridiculously heavy favorite. Payouts are no fun when that happens. Still, he is beatable, and stranger things have happened.

Against my better (or should I say bettor...[rimshot]...ok I'll stop now) instincts I'll probably be making a few wagers.

Thoughts anyone?

Exaggerator might have a shot to win with a sloppy track. Lots of speed in the race so Cherry Wine could close for third. Stradivari is the only other decent horse in the field.

Might make a bet on Exaggerator over Nyquist in the exacta. Tri would be those two with Cherry Wine and Stradivari for third.

Otherwise, yeah not excited.

This really wet forecast will sucker me into making some sucker bets.

Nyquist has yet to show any weakness on mud; but he has yet to see a really sloppy track. If the rain doesn't happen, I'll just sit back and watch.

If the rain does happen, I'll be betting exactas. I'll certainly use any son of Curlin on the mud (Exaggerator). Cherry Wine has Unbridled Song on the damside and is proven on slop, so I'll use him. I'll use Awesome Speed. If I have much money left, I may include Lani...just because I'm greedy and the odds should be equal to JH's Phillies winning the World Series...alas, his chances are also equal...but I'm greedy. Stradivari I can use if his odds stay near the morning line of 8 to 1.

So Exaggerator over those four colts. I'll box Exaggerator and some of those if it's really sloppy. If it's really, really sloppy...I might try a trifecta box...even though I can't see Nyquist finishing outside the top three...unless he just really hates mud.

There is just no point in including Nyquist in any single race exotic wagers. The payoff will be too light. Even missing The Derby trifecta doesn't sting because it just wasn't much money. The sting comes from how much I lost and what might have been.

Ben Tucker (still hurting from The Derby)

Bets made. Nyquist and Exaggerator as the top. Cherry Wine and Stradivari under in the tri.

Exaggerator odds dropping and Nyquist going up. As long as the exacta pays more than $4 I should be ok.

Apparently a large sum was bet on Stradivari and he's now the favorite. Interesting...

Exaggerator, Cherry wine, and then a tired Nyquist.

Just didn't have it in him for the blistering pace early and the muddy track.

No great horse this year, it appears, just a lot of decent ones.

Hey, I finally got one right. That was fun. Both exactas paid, but I did not take my own advice and I played a trifecta box. Still, a net profit day.

I need to correct Alan's typo: There are no great COLTS this year. There are several outstanding fillies. A minor...but important...distinction.

Yeah, not so much. Had Nyquist in the top two. Crap. Less than a $100 loss. Will Nyquist run the Belmont, I don't think so. Exaggerator will run and probably Cherry Wine. Nyquist will point to the Haskell or Travers and the Breeders Cup. I would guess Haskill and Breeders then retire to stud.

Belmont Stakes shaping up to be a really slow race. No speed in the field.

Probable field
Brody’s Cause
Cherry Wine
Creator
Destin
Exaggerator
Governor Malibu
Lani
Stradivari
Suddenbreakingnews
Wild About Deb

Stradivari could steal this from front.

Well...Place if tuck is the front half...if jhcurl is up front then I might throw a flyer up on the win, since Eastie...

I think Exaggerator is the best horse in the field, but he was all-out in The Derby and again all-out in the Preakness. I'm going to be looking for a more fresh colt to win.

If I do include any colt from the Preakness, it will probably be an improving Lani from Japan. His workout routine is really, really long every day. He is trained for distance. He's a son of Tapit, so I'll probably leave him off my tickets...but I have yet to decide.

I will definitely be looking to win back some of my Derby losses by betting on Destin. As long as he stays better than 8 to 1, he'll be my bet. He is absolutely my pick. I'm afraid he is going to be this year's Keen Ice. The one time Keen Ice won last year, I was on the road and it was the only time I didn't play him. The payoff was huge. Crap. I hope Destin cashes for me in 9 days.

The bomb I'll be using on my tickets will be Brody's Cause. He has stamina-influence-sire Roberto on top and bottom of his pedigree and he didn't run in the Preakness.

So: Destin wins. Brody's Cause gets second. Exaggerator hangs on for third.

I think the best payouts will be in the Pick Four multi-race bet. It's quite a card of races they have for Belmont Stakes Day. I will probably use multiple horses in most every race and single Destin in the finale.

I could be wrong. Don't be stupid and bet too much. Been there...done that.

Ben Tucker
