Ladder formats

Looking for some input for our club for our league play. What type of ladder systems does your club use? Are you able to offer a brief description?

Thanks for your help.

We play with the format where, in the A section, a win, loss, or tie is worth more than a win, loss, or tie in the B section, etc. - whatever the 'official' name of this format is (I've heard it referred to by different names).

As in...
A section: Win - 15 points, Tie - 12.5 points, Loss - 10 points...
B section: Win - 14 points, Tie - 11.5 points, Loss - 9 points...
C section: Win - 13 points, Tie - 10.5 points, Loss - 8 points... Etc.

While we have 4 rounds throughout the season, the points which each team gets accumulate throughout the entire the season (points are never reset to zero during the season).

It takes a little time to get used to points being awarded for a loss, but I feel that this is the most balanced and fair format I've been involved with.

We do something similar only using fewer points.

How do you determine who plays in the A/B/C section? Are teams initially seeded, or is there a short "play-in" series to designate who plays in each section.

Also, do you move 1 or 2 teams up/down as points warrant after each round?

Thanks again.

The exact number of points awarded is irrelevant, as long as the relative difference in points awarded remains between each section.

Ideally, we have 6 teams in each section. Teams move up or down based simply on number of accumulated points at the end of each round (5 games). There is no automatic movement - it goes simply by points... so, after every 5 game round, everything is re-aligned based on points accumulated to that stage. In the event of a tie in points, the team which is in the higher section remains there.

As for deciding who plays in which section (A, B, C, etc.), we begin each season by basing on the previous season's final results (not playoffs, just final 'regular season' results). Any newly formed teams must start the season in the lowest section.
