If you are talking the poor attendance at the Boost National that was not because of high costs. Saulites are cheap sure but the crowd were not curling fans. They were hockey fans that only showed up to watch Jacobs since they didn't have any Greyhounds games to go to with the arena booked up. The place always had good attendance when Jacobs was playing. Case in point the crowd erupting in cheers when teams missed shots against Jacobs and even louder cheers when Ryan Harnden made a come around on his second rock of an end.

Honestly, I was ashamed of the crowd at the Boost National this week. I actually had to get up and leave during one draw because the crowd was so obnoxious.

Its a shame when people/fans boo the team they are not supporting. Its just bad taste and it probably embarrasses the curlers as well. Some people just don't think or perhaps they just don't care. Either way, poor judgement. Sorry you had to leave the game. I watched it on TV and it was pretty darn good. Both teams played very very well. Its just a shame there has to be a loser. On the bright side, both rinks are now ensconced for the ROR.

It's pitiful that the Grand Slam organizers (Sportsnet?) are happy with such low attendance. They don't seem to understand (or simply don't care) that poor attendance reflects poorly on the sport. Casual curling fans and people who are a little curious about curling will see the seats being 3/4 empty and move on to another channel - because 3/4 empty seats gives the very loud message that nothing important or interesting is happening here.

If the organizers had any sense, and truly cared about curling (rather than simply caring about the dollar), they would do everything they could do to get the most seats filled possible - including lowering ticket prices, and even giving away some tickets through contests or something similar. They wouldn't be losing any money by lowering ticket prices, as more people would buy them - the only difference would be that more people would be in the seats, which is an important factor when you're trying to sell the game to people.

Just because they're making money with a 75% empty arena is not nearly good enough. The organizers should be thinking beyond their own personal profits, and trying to sell the game to the casual/curious fan. And putting more people in the seats is an important aspect of selling the game to those people, because a fuller venue shows people that something interesting and important is happening, and so these casual/curious people would stick around instead of changing the channel.

well the thing is, in many other sports, in fact in pretty much every other team sport at least fans boo the team they dont support. if these fans arent curling fans it doesnt surprise me that they wouldnt know any better.

not saying i agree with the act of booing someone else but its just what they're used to.
