Only in Curling...

Only in curling can we see ads on an electronic board in Las Vegas for... farming materials.

It just adds to the informal, unpretentious uniqueness of our sport...

The part I found kinda weird is...

They had these massive running lightboards along the sidelines, advertising all kinds of stuff...

But next to the scoreboards, there were cardboard ads, manually shuffled by a volunteer every couple of ends.

You'd think they'd get some technology to handle that.

For that matter...the scoreboards themselves were hand run (I know, I was one of the ones who ran em)...

Somewhat weird...

Alan, all about cost. Everything that was digital was already available from the arena. Everything that was done on paper/cardboard/vinyl, that was paid for by the event.

The cost to have a scoreboard that was electronic to replace the manual scoreboard that size would be very high.

Yes, an electronic scoreboard would cost more than a manually operated one... but surely the extra cost of the electronic scoreboard could be largely offset by placing an ad or two for manure fertilizer atop it...

But the point of ads is to raise money. Every dollar spent is a dollar not going to, well whoever the ad money is going to which I dont know. I am not certain that advertisers would pay more money to have their ad on an electronic sign versus a cardboard one. Otherwise you would need to riase ticket prices to offset the added expense.

Judging by the reportedly packed crowds at the Continental Cup, they could probably get away with raising the prices somewhat. After all, people go to Vegas to spend money, right? Well, that and the other thing...

Personally, I'd just like to see an ad for manure in Vegas. And, of all the various activities happening in Vegas, I'm quite sure that an ad like that has the best chance of occurring with curling.
