2015 CIS / CCA Curling Championships

The Canadian University National Championship starts on Wednesday at the K-W Granite Club in Waterloo, Ontario.

MEN

- Wilfrid Laurier (hosts and OUA Champions)
- Western (OUA Silver Medalists)
- Toronto (OUA Bronze Medalists)
- UNB (AUS Champions)
- Saint Marys (AUS Silver Medalists)
- Dalhousie (AUS Bronze Medalists)
- Winnipeg (CW Champions)
- Alberta (CW Silver Medalists)

WOMEN

- Wilfrid Laurier (hosts and OUA Champions)
- Brock (OUA Silver Medalists)
- Guelph (OUA Bronze Medalists)
- Saint Marys (AUS Champions)
- UPEI (AUS Silver Medalists)
- StFX (AUS Bronze Medalists)
- Thompson Rivers (CW Champions)
- Alberta (CW Silver Medalists)

Early favourites have to be the dual squads from Sir Wilfred Laurier skipped by Aaron Squires and Carly Howard. The K-W Granite is located about 200 yards from the University, and both teams train there full time. The WLU teams had a bye to the nationals by virtue of being the hosts, but they also both won gold at OUA to qualify two ways.

That said, there are many other big names on the list. Alberta is sending Kelsey Rocque as skip, reigning junior world champion. Josh Barry played at the Brier two weeks ago for PEI, and will be skipping UNB.

CurlingGeek will have coverage of every draw, and will cover all 8 sheets on championship Saturday.

Event Schedule:
http://english.cis-sic.ca/champions...s/sched_results

CurlingGeek Schedule, day 1:

8 am: Western vs Alberta (m)
Noon: Thompson Rivers vs. UPEI (w)
4 pm: Laurier vs UNB (m)

Pity the poor university men: they drew the 8am draw the day after travel and St Paddy's day. That probably meant a 6am wake up call.

Coming up at 8am eastern: University of Alberta vs Western:

Final day of the round robin. The men play 3 games, the women 2. Top 4 teams on each side make the playoffs. No page system, just 1vs4 and 2vs3, with winners meeting for gold on Saturday

Men:

code:
Team W L Wilfrid Laurier University (m) 4 0 University of Alberta (m) 4 0 Saint Mary's University (m) 2 2 University of Toronto (m) 2 2 University of Winnipeg (m) 2 2 University of New Brunswick (m) 1 3 University of Western (m) 1 3 Dalhousie University (m) 0 4

Laurier and Alberta need just one win each today to clinch a playoff spot, so it's mostly about seeding for them. All of the other teams, including 0-4 Dalhousie, are still in it. No tiebreaker games due to CIS rules. Head to head is first tiebreak, but in the case of a three way (or more) tie, it comes down to the Last Shot Draw numbers.

Women:

code:
Team W L Thompson Rivers University (w) 5 0 University of Alberta (w) 4 1 Brock University (w) 3 2 University of Guelph (w) 3 2 Wilfrid Laurier University (w) 3 2 University of Prince Edward Island (w) 2 3 St. Francis Xavier University (w) 0 5 Saint Mary's University (w) 0 5

TRU has locked up a playoff spot already, and both SFX and SMU are out. The middle 5 are fighting for three spots. Big games at noon: Laurier v Guelph and Thompson vs Brock.

CurlingGeek will be there all day long. First up is the battle for first on the men's side: Laurier vs. Alberta, starting at 8am eastern. https://games.curlinggeek.com

Last games of the round robin.

Men: AB, WLU and SMU are in (SMU beat Winnipeg and Toronto). Winner of Toronto v Winnipeg is in.

Women: TRU, AB, and WLU are in.

If Guelph beats TRU, Guelph has 3 losses and is in
If Guelph loses, the Guelph, Brock and PEI all finish at four losses, and:

- Brock beat Guelph
- Guelph beat PEI
- PEI beat Brock

So it comes down to the Last Shot Draw! According to the unnofficial numbers, Guelph wins that scenario by 5.8cm total over the sum of 12 draws!

http://bit.ly/CISLSD

So if my math is right, Toronto vs Winnipeg is the only game that matter tonight. CurlingGeek will be there!

Women's side math craziness.

Brock ended at 3-4.

Pretend Guelph loses, and also ends at 3-4.

If PEI had lost to go to 5 losses, Brock & Guelph are tied, and *Brock* advances because they beat Guelph head to head.

Because PEI won, we have a three way tie at 3-4, with each team having a 1-1 record against the others. So: that triggers a Last Shot Draw tiebreaker, and *Guelph* wins that!

So the UPEI game potentially chose the winner, despite the fact that UPEI had no way to advance either way.

Oops! CurlingGeek was totally wrong.

Guelph missed the paint with both draws in the last round robin game, pushing UPEI into the lead for last rock draw. So: Guelph must win against TRU, otherwise UPEI gets the last playoff spot.
