I, like Hans, am sick as well of all the excuses. The rocks, the ice, the prints, the picks, .... I have never once heard any of those guys come down and say ... "got that one going" or "got a little wide on ya there".....

And as far as matching, these are the best curlers in the World. They can't figure out the rocks are off? So, they want perfect conditions and perfect rocks so there is no "mystery" to the game.

When did ice and rock reading become a lost art?

JH
maybe I could market my "skillz"?

You ever notice that its alot more common to hear one of the ladies admit to that then the men?

i have often heard all the men admit to a bad throw ... however when you are curling 90% + a pic or a run can change the outcome of the end and often the game

i think the mens powerful sweeping with new brooms seems to be too hard on the ice .... i recall one of the women skips on sunday had a new brush and it was audibly different .. sounded like scratching

the free guards were intended to be an equalizer but maybe this should be tweaked now as it isnt fair to the superior curlers...it definitely leads to risky play and deminishes the value of last rock .... often to the point there isnt a reasonable shot

There's an easy answer; stop getting sucked into playing just in the four foot. I laugh at what passes for strategy these days-cluster the stones, then throw a hand grenade.

Peel some center guards, go around corners and have fewer stones clustered in a bunch. Skips today either have no imagination or we need coaches that can teach the art of calling a game.

easier said than done .. most mens games are determined by about 5 key shots - a raise double for 3 , a seconds draw coming to back of 4 , etc - if the 3 ender comes early the die is cast

if rachels coach had gone for a tims in the 8th against scotland she would have fired the double for 14 points and the win about 7 of 8 times ...

its painful to watch the discussions - mcewan takes a minute to decide - one shot in the 6th i think was 3 minutes talking then he made it perfect .. howard, koe, and martin teams the same .. curling is more like poker now - used to be like chess

Michel has worked hard this season and could peak to a play off position. Also, the Russian team has surprised me this year. They have barely had a blip until this year, but have had some strong wins. Middle of the pack. Czech Republic is also gaining experience.

I guess we can have a 5 rock rule which one of the curling tours used last year I believe it was. It gave teams who somehow were down by 4 points a bit of a hope of coming back. And please don't blame Lisa Weagle being the best tick master in Canada if not Canada for countering the center guards.

Earle talked them into the right call. That they ultimately lost the game doesn't change that.

The tick shot has been in play since the FGZ was instituted. Most teams do not use it as much as they should and certainly this is a weapon. Key thing is that it must be made regularly to be effective. Most men's teams only use it in latter end situations but they could play it early if they chose to. There is some risk involved for the reward but we may see it used more.

I dont know..I think what will hold him back is his apparent inability to beat the top teams at the major championships and his vulnerability to the upset.

both of his euros were disappointments..his first can be chalked up to lack of experience but then he went back and showed no signs of improvement

If it became a regular part of the game that was used in early ends, games would become low scoring and boring.

If the tick shot became so commonly (and successfully) used that it defeated the very purpose of the free guard zone rule, it would stand to reason that we might see the rule changed to not allow rocks in the free guard zone to be moved at all.

The fact that rachel does employ the tick shot so frequently is one aspect i find really annoying and a negative of her game.I agree with DrWho that said if its used to frequently it makes game more open but also boring.

If more teams do start to emply it more frequently in games I agree with Nelsosi, we may just very well see the rule introduced that you cant touch the first 4 rocks of the game

Homan is the first team to use the tick shot as an offensive weapon. Most teams use it as a defence against a steal in the last end. Homan would routinely end up with 4 corner guards which she used to generate multiple points with the hammer.

Back on topic, I think S Michel (SUI) can be a contender. They went deep in Victoria beating NOR to qualify and lost a close one to Gushue in the play-offs. Definately a threat for a medal.

There are a couple of different options. Teams would figure out how to "guard" against the tick. All without the hammer - throw a corner, throw it very tight to the rings (tick moves it in), throw it back 8, etc. I think that there would be some experimenting to try and figure out a way to defeat it. This happened with the 3 rock rule.

How about we revert to the original "Moncton" rule, no rock can be removed from play until after the 4th rock is thrown. Read that carefully, does not matter where the rock is, it cannot be removed from play. Do you think that would "void" the tick? It probably would bring the play into the 4 foot right away but it could be really interesting. Teams might get really good at throwing a top 12 biter then drawing around it.

Anyway, this is the "Mens Worlds" thread. No team is applying the "Weagle" until the 10th end. Someone should start a new thread and we can debate this all summer.

JH
once listened to a 2 hour radio talk show on the Moncton rule

What's the difference between being called 'sternwheeler' and being unregistered?

The only way you can change that is to not allow nicknames or unregistered posts and every post would have to be under the poster's real name.

And that would cause two things; first, the instant death of CZ, second; we would never have to suffer another Manitoba Legend post(perhaps a worthwhile sacrifice! :-) ).

So to all you whiners demanding unregistered identities, unmask yourselves first before you get all self righteous.

Dino Rock is about as close to my name as you are going to get. Makes me pretty damn easy to find. Legend has been outed a couple of times here. Big deal. He still graces the pages, like it or not.
Actually I used to argue for people to register, but now I really don't care. I find it quite easy to identify writing and spelling patterns. That, along with a consistent IP number tells us if not who you are, what you have posted in the past. So, in a sense, we are all anonymous but none of us are.

Was planning to buy a single ticket to the World Mens. Started with a single ticket price of $20. Next, was hit with a fee of $5 and another charge of $3. Final charge of will call adds $2 for a total charge of $30 - net increase of 50% over initial quoted price - decided to pass.
