I wish the Olympics would scrap mixed doubles curling and just do mixed ordinary curling instead. That's how a ton of people play curling now, and it's a great format.

This five rock per end stuff just doesn't appeal to me. Eight rocks provide so much more depth to the strategy.

I've tried to get to like Mixed Doubles, but I just can't. It feels gimmicky and lacking in deep strategy. Every end develops the same way, with a race to the 4 foot, and a series of freezes, taps and tight guards. It typically takes some misses before we see a different sort of end. The variety of types of ends and range of strategy that we see in the 'standard' game just isn't there.

You only have to watch the opening ceremonies to figure out what’s happening

100 countries - about 15 with contenders - the rest represented by pseudo athletes that didn’t make the grade in their home country

The lure of olympic medals and “ attendance “ has watered down my interest ...the drug fiasco - 4 years later , and reversed 2 weeks later is painfull. They allow Russian athletes but not Russia .. what a joke ...

They make a big deal about athletes that attend two to 8 olympics over 32 years ...and the CBC is no better sending the same old stale announcers for 40 years .

The watered down hockey team will be interesting .... the woman’s team is only challenged by USA ...

The curling the next week is the same teams at every slam event every two weeks the last 15 years .

I kinda like Shot-Stack Curling. . . . . every end pretty similar but one little mistake of 1/2 inch to 1 inch and you're screwed.

Kaitlyn is always fun to watch, Johnny Mope a loop tape of the same old guff he's been spewing for 20 years.

NOTE: Kaitlyn hasn't curled over 75% in any of her 4 games - that's unusual - in reg. curling she's almost always 77% to 85% even with JJ icing her poorly.

But she's still 3-1, needs 1 more win in her final 3 games to secure a spot in the playoffs. Lawes & Mo a real Alphonse & Gaston act - but nowhere near the Laurel & Hardy act of the American siblings.

At least they ditched the "Hey, let's make everyone deliver on a shot clock so we can blast music in the stadium between shots" plan.

Thank god.

FOR obvious reasons, Mixed is far more difficult/precise than Regular curling.

Shooting percentages are therefore normally 5 to 10 percentage points lower.

I would argue with the 'more difficult' assessment.

Don't even know whether Canadian skip Lawes will play the draw of the land like her regular skip Jones does.

Doesn't appear to matter who you play in the semi-finals; whoever is hot in one game will have the upper hand.

The only team I'd be slightly leery of Lawes herself - she's ferocious.

Other than that - a Canada vs Norway semi would eliminate a top team into the final - so that's what the other good teams are hoping for!

I think you meant to say 2 Canadians that got together days before the trials, Out curled all the others at the trials and won, Then went to the Olympics and beat the reigning world champions that have curled together for YEARS...YEARS. One more time, YEARS.

Go Canada Go

I wanna see Maria Sharapova play mixed dubs.

Instead of the testy Hamiltons, how 'bout Bruno Mars & Rihanna.

Have you tried both formats? I have personally found it's far more difficult and challenging to attempt a normal takeout/peel or say a draw, or a tap or a freeze when there's only one sweeper, or perhaps no sweeper at all. And to make matters worse, it's not unusual, as you know, to have to frequently make shots when there's no broom to actually aim at!!

If you were to examine the shot percentages of curlers who play both formats, you will find, I believe, a significant drop in their percentage when they're in Mixed. So if you don't believe this discrepancy is primarily due to increased 'Difficulty", what do you attribute it to?

well many curling games are won by luck -- in mixed doubles they have thrown in a few extra twists that result in misses..

a game of skill is honed by the dragon " tv " - ideally every rock in play - last shot is a triple raise takeout for 5

lots of winners - not necessarily the best - or tv will add another twist - like arena ice and picks

Pretty sure the Swiss are the defending world champions and are professional curlers, Finland are a top mixed doubles team as well and the Hamiltons also play together, so once again you speak without any knowledge.

why?

They are two great individual players.

Thrown together at the last minute would not change their shotmaking. I am sure since knowing they would be going, they would have talked everyday on getting to each other better, what they like, don't like, etc.

I see two great curlers doing well individually at an event to be able to be combined and still curl to their potential.

Kaitlyn Lawes is the poster girl for the Korean Olympics. More close-ups of her, and performance shots than any other single participant.

She's also turning into a ferocious medal-chasing mean girl - bursting thru the 75% barrier this a.m. with a scintillating 76% performance vs. Russia.

Can't wait to see Kaitlyn & John in the medal round.

Can't wait for the actual Mean GIrls of Ottawa to get underway - tested under Olympic pressure!

I've been watching a Canadian team that's getting stronger and Stronger and STRONGER with each passing game.

While it's easy to pick 3 teams other than Canada that could possibly win gold, what are you seeing on your tv to suggest that Canada does not have at least an equal chance of winning?

I don't know why you are embarrassed or are dissing Kaitlyn and John's talent, They are both Olympic and World champions and their skills are not lessened by playing MDs.

In pro tennis, they also have doubles specialists who do very well on the circuit. Then every once in a while, the Williams sisters decide to play doubles together, and they usually cut through all those specialists like a hot knife through butter when they do.

I’m getting a similar vibe watching Morris and Lawes in this mixed doubles competition.

Sniffles blinky appears to have the flu today

Camera work , as usual, likes faces and close ups -

a few more overheads showing house to hog would be nice

rocks coming into the house dont need close ups - they are round and weigh 40 # - draw back ( out) so we can see where the moving rock is headed ..

morris sometimes cant see forest for trees - thou he looks better clean shaven

Whose Sniffles blinky? Small Tiny is curling very well and managing Morris. Her training with JJ is paying off.
