Watching the women's US open golf. They start to talk about one of the Canadian amateur players. Make the statement that golf is more popular in Canada for youngsters than hockey. Next thing that is said is "what about curling?" Then a putt is hit that does not quite get close "could have used some brooms on that to get it closer".

This was on ESPN. ESPN is ready to show curling, at least a little bit.

Is Redskins an acceptable team name?

I would suggest that it is never a word that would be used in polite conversation, so it is inappropriate.

I can see the word Indian used in conversation: "My friend here is an American Indian." I can see Seminole: "My friend is from the Seminole tribe." I can even see Braves: "My friend is descended from a long line of American Indian braves."

I can't see Redskins in polite conversation: "My friend is a Redskin" will certainly cost you that friend and probably get you a well earned punch in the face.

I've never been much for politically correct conversation, but this one seems way over the line to me. Sorry, Sean.

First, Tuck is banned for a least a month for talking politics.

Much more importantly, Charrissa Lin of the National Mixed winning team from Nutmeg and the GNCC has qualified for the Boston Marathon. Charrissa and the rocket scientist moved to New Mexico. Charrissa has transitioned into the running world. She ran a 3:37 today in Duluth to qualify. The background is she was on pace to qualify last fall in PA, took a mis-step and ended up with a face full of lacerations.

Again, congrats to her! Moving on from the curling world and showing that curlers are also athletes.

Preliminary rosters are out for the TDF. Andy and Frank are back. Last time the TDF hit the pave, Frank fell over and broke a collarbone. Surprised to see Nibali listed, did not think he was riding.

Can Froome handle the pave? Not a lot of it this year but....Could be the year for a "new" AMerican, van Garderen or Talansky. No Sir Bradley Wiggins. Dude wins, gets knighted and then cut from the team, just not right.

Will be back with info on the TDF fantasy league when it gets going.

JH
kick a ball around or ride downhill at 60 mph on 1/2 inch tires. Oh yeah, did I mention the 1000 foot drop off and the hairpin turns?

yes but can you get bitten while riding your bike? And can you truly hate a whole team of riders because of something the team did when none of the current riders were even alive.

What about getting hit by a car and thrown into a barbed wire fence. Not too many barbed wire fences while kicking a ball around but there might be guns or flares ;-)

JH
have noticed dogs on the ride before not sure if they bit anyone....

To me the TDF is a lot like most American's view of Olympic sports - call me when an American is going to win and I'll watch and claim I've been supporting him all along.

I do want to see a fans that gets RIGHT in a rider's face get hit with a bike pump ala Breaking Away (because putting it in another rider's wheels would be worse than biting)

I think you prefer men in tights to men in shorts.

Not that there is anything wrong with that....

I really enjoy a stupid sport where you slide a rock on ice and then teammates sweep franticly for no apparent reason. That leaves me in no position to judge the passions of others, because my passion is quite silly.

That being said: Soccer and bike racing??? No, thank you.

USA Olympic Men's team is going to throw out the first pitch at Monday's Minnesota Twins game. Face only has four passions in life; his wife, family, curling and baseball. Once a pretty dang good ballplayer, bet on Face delivering a strike. Then parlay your profits by taking the Twins to beat the streaking/division-leading KC Royals.

Just for Tuck, the next American hope was named the team leader for Garmin-Sharp. Andrew Talansky will compete for the GC with the team built around him to support the effort.

Tuck, you should like bike racing. There are leads that support the team by bringing water bottles from the team car, there are seconds who jump into the breakaways to cut down the chances of the opponents, there are thirds who attack other teams to decrease their chances of winning and then there are skips, the team leader who the rest of the team is supporting.

Lots of good TDF info here
http://velonews.competitor.com/category/tour-de-france

This year once again, no prologue for the first stage but a regular stage. Look for a sprinter to wear the maillot jaune for the first few days. The Manx missile wants it very badly.

Happy Fourth of July 'Murica. We will be celebrating by having a hurricane (no, not the drink) here on the East coast.

Everyone stay safe and leave the big fireworks to the professionals.

The Manx missile could be out of le Tour after one stage. Big crash in the final run-up to the finish. Lots of "argey-bargey" as Phil would say. Think it was Cavendish at fault. Looks like it could be a broken collar bone which is a typical injury in a high speed crash.

Makes picking my fantasy team a lot easier if he is out.

Back from the VA Eastern Shore and Atlantic City...

got to play three 9-hole rounds with my father over the weekend, including one the same day that the hurricane came through (it did no damage in the area, and was gone by noon, by 2 the course was playable, although the upwind/downwind effects were quite dramatic...)

good news...I shot 63 on saturday.

bad news...that's for 9 holes...

frustrating, stupid game anyway.

And then Atlantic City....

Not sure if anyone here was ever there during it's 80's and 90's heyday...but...well...it's not that anymore. The casino my wife and I loved to stay at is closing at the end of this summer because it's not making enough money...and it shows.

The expansion of gambling has basically killed AC as a destination. At least the fireworks were cool.

As for the quality of my gambling while I was there...well...let's put it this way...my golf was comparatively good.

I need a new mini-vacation destination, preferably driving distance from Washington, DC...gambling optional...other things to do mandatory. (the wife doesn't curl, so traveling the bonspiel circuit isn't an option, unless Vegas hosts a big thing every single year)...suggestions?

Well rain and cobble stones did not mix well for Chris Froome. Crashes out of the TDF. Lots of riders hit the deck today. Nibili probably won today and has a big lead going into the mountains.

Alan, Mystic CT and/or Newport RI, Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods close by and not run down like AC.

Question though...is there other stuff to do that isn't just gambling? Gambling I can do within a 20 minute drive of my apartment (if there's no traffic, at least).

I'm looking for someplace that can keep my and the wife's interests for a few days or so...stuff to do that doesn't involve handing the casino money in ever larger quantities to keep getting chips to lose

Google is your friend. Mystic has the seaport and aquarium. Newport has all the old mansions and mansion tours. Both very scenic. Groton CT is also right there, not sure if they still do tours of the sub base.

Our little "fantasy" group for Le Tour is underway. You pick a team of 15 riders and then have 10 in play each day. Starting with stage 5 (pave!) the points count for daily prizes and a grand prize. One of our group is in the top 20 out of 10k+ players. It is early in the race.

The way this TDF is going, I think Tuck had a chance to win. Lots of crashes and contenders going out. Even had a guy abandon on the rest day today. Lots of bumps and lumps left to go. Nibali having great luck so far, can his team defend for two more weeks? That would be something, to have the maillot jaune for 19 of 21 stages.

In other ramblings, Ann Swisshelm wins the Cape Cod mixed summerspiel. Sean skipped so he had to wear the seaweed crown they place on the winner. I wonder if they still soak it in a bucket just before they put it on your head? Cape Cod summerspiel is actually 5 spiels in one, men's, women's, mixed, juniors and wheelchair spread over 2 or 3 weeks.

The open championship to crown the champion golfer of the year starts on Thursday.

JH
