This is incorrect. Only rocks touched before the hog line at the playing end are removed immediately.

In this case the moving rock was touched by the team to which it belongs after it had crossed the hog line at the playing end. There is no automatic decision in this case. The non-offending team then gets a choice of three options:

1. Allow the play to stand (in this case, the stone went out of play).
2. Remove the stone from play and replace any other affected stone to where it was (in this case, equivalent to 1.)
3. Put the stone where the think it would have ended up had it not been touched.

In this case NO essentially chose option 3., although they didn't actually place the stone where they thought it ended up and they simply told the officials AB had scored 1.

The only possible thing an official could have done to intervene would have been to force NO to actually put the stone where they thought it would have ended up. The official can't make the decision for the non-offending team.

Obviously everyone in the world would have been astounded had NO not taken option 3. in this case, but that's just how the game is played. If they had elected to remove the AB stone from play, we might have seen the first bench clearing brawl in Brier history!

Risk versus reward. Reward is you take one point. Risk is the other team steals three. Why even take the risk if you have a sure point.

John Kawaja used to do this all the time. I even remember a TV game with him kicking off a stone, while in motion, when the end wasn't over! There was still another rock to come. The rock had to be placed back and the end completed.

Glenn Howard looks unbeatable so far. The only ones who could stop him are a totally on fire Martin, and he isnt even likely to make the playofs at this point, and maybe an fire Stoughton which he looks far from so far. Glenn is looking good at this point to capture another Brier title if he keeps up this form. Gushue is playing great, but Howard has always had the edge in that matchup, with whichever team Brad had.

Classic Jon Mead on the rock controversy:

"we're not the type of team to pick the fly crap out of the poop the way some teams do"

And that is why Manitoba is one of the teams leading the way.

I think they're (rightfully) frustrated. They could/should have won the Stoughton game, if not for Johnny Mo's two bad misses in the extra. Quebec played fantastic against them. And in the NB game, NB played out of their minds - every time Alberta had something going NB stuck a run back, or made a perfect hit and roll or draw to take the end away. Even the shot Grattam made in 10 to win it was a beauty - very little margin for error on that one.

It's not an excuste, as it's certainly true that Alberta is not in top form, but how the games have unfolded has got to be frustrating for them as well.

The empty stands look terrible. Almost looks like a World Curling Tour event. I'm sure they will pick up for weekend but looks awful for the early week games.

Still, 5 other teams have managed winning records on the same ice with the same rocks and the majority of them with sweepers as affective as Ben and company.

An 'in form' Martin team would be a decent bet to run the table from here....but I don't see that happening this week. Wouldn't surprise me at all though to see them win their next 3 to get to 5-4, which would set up an interesting final day against NL and Ont. Would be entertaining if that final draw against Ontario was a "win-in, lose-out" scenario for Alberta - not at all out of the question for that scenario to transpire.

Just noticed that Gushue still has to play Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Alberta. They haven't played the 'better' teams yet (apart from Jacobs) - no surprise they are 6-0 right now.

Yes kevin should get to 5-4 however there are teams in his way that are very capable of stopping him. Go back and you'll see that I didnt consider New Brunswick a threat and look what happened.

Yukon and Saskatchewan are definately capable of doing the same

Saskatchewan might not have a winning record but they are playing well, they've been in all but one of their games. They could have come back from 0-5 down and beat New Brunswick and gave Jeff and Glenn who are playing well all they could handle.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

everyone thought Kevin and the team were back on track after they hammered BC and then they lost their next 2 games. They hammered Nova Scotia last night but im gonna wait and see what happens against the Yukon/NWT tonight.

There have been more picks at this event than any big one i can remember in recent times. There were a good 3 or 4 in the first few ends of Northern Onatrio/Ontario last night

I'm kind of really getting sick of Russ commenting on what good brushing Northern Ontario has! There is no doubt about it that these boys are super strong and fit, but that means nothing if they have no idea on how to judge weight! Atleast twice this game they have overbrushed a Jacobs draw, at this rate is see their playoff hopes dwindling.

In my best scottish accent " Brrrushes down boys!"
The main reason why i like at least one hair brush sweeping, it usually picks up the debris the synthetics may slide over.

That was a big issue with NO at previous briers as I recall -- lots of rocks overswept or underswept.

The next televised game featuring Quebec, lets not bother to mic Martin Crete. He is already loud. OMG, I had to mute the volume every time Menard delivered his stone and when Crete was calling the sweeping on his own delivered rock. Late game tonight. Should be a good one. Am enjoying this event soooooo much. Have a good evening. Regards...

Is this sarcastic?

The chances of Brad stealing 3 on anyone are slim but against jeff there is about a .5% chance .

fresca, I love reading your posts. great attitude. we also noticed that martin crete didn't put the broom down anywhere near where menard indicated. I wonder why menard didn't notice that when he was in the hack,

keep 'em coming fresca. You are fun to read .

NOnt took a big hit losing to Virtue, with a tough game against Manitoba up next. They're likely to end up on 4 losses now.
