The battle for points begins
Stu Sells (Oakville) starts on Thursday. I would think decent points available especially on the men's side.
Will be watching with greater interest this season. Teams Shuster and Eigner on the men's side in this one. For the women, Teams Brown and McCormick. Also the three top Swiss women's teams so a good test out of the box.
Both Brown and McCormick seem to have good pools for the RR. Eigner and Shuster in the same pool with some guy from Scotland. That will be tough since there is also a Lyburn in there.

let the games begin
PPS did you see that the Phightins' had their first combined no hitter ever, only took 132 years

First game for Face will be against Doc Eigner...but only after Doc has played that lightly-regarded/inexperienced Scottish team.
Nice to see these four teams out there on their own dime striving for the top.

Not so fast. I don't think Doc & co. are still playing in it.

Someone explain this draw to me...
Okay...I get that there are six pools, where they will play round robin...okay, that makes sense.
From there, it appears 12 teams advance to a playoff bracket. I assume top 2 from each pool?
If that's true, how are they determining which four of the six pool winners get the byes into the quarters? Best record? Most points? Coin flips? Beers consumed during broomstacking?

I was wrong. They're playing without Ben. Played well vs Face.

Looks like Shuster and McCormick will qualify for the playoffs and earn the first points of the season.

A pair of wins and a pair of tight losses does not look great for Erika Brown-Tetley. One loss in an extra end and the other in the dreaded "1 up without coming home" scenario.
Nice to see some cashes, particularly with teams on budgets.

Shuster gets on the board with a Quarterfinal result. Not updated yet on the WCT OOM list, but still, it's a good result (although it appears the QF match itself...wasn't quite so good)

The points are up from Stu Sells Oakville. 12.5 for team Shuster, not a bad start. Deb McCormick also earns points for making the playoffs.
Next chance for points looks to be Twin Cities Open in Blaine if they get the required number of teams.

Thanks, did not see that. That would be this weekend, decent team list and should have decent points available.

Lots of teams playing this weekend in the Twin Cities Open in Blaine. From the looks of the team listing they are mixing the men and women together in RR pools(?). If so, I don't think that points will be available based on the this from the OOM rules - "Events that combine men and women, either in a single section/pool of the draw or in a section of the playoff round, are not eligible for OOM points."
Maybe they are not putting the teams into the same pools?

You are correct, the men's and women's events were combined into one due to a lack of entries on the women's side. It's my understanding that the men's teams there will still be eligible to earn points, but the women's teams will not be. Not exactly sure how that will work, or honestly if it's even true, but that's what I've been told.

Clarification from Gerry:
"If you seed the women's teams across all pools, like any other men's team it's fine. If you put all women's teams into 1 pool to guarantee a set number of qualifiers, teams do not earn points."
As in past years on US WCT events that are "Open" events where men and women play together, men will be able to earn points at this event.
Thanks

Thanks for the clarification. Good to see the event will award points for the men's teams at least.

So, now that we got the points thing sorted. Men's teams can earn points but HP teams not there so a chance for the "self-formed" to pick up some points. On the women's side, no points but a chance to see what the competition looks like for the year. Women's field is very strong, too bad they did not attract enough teams.

Originally one of the HPP teams was scheduled to play.
However I don't think it is a matter of entering the Shorty but being accepted into the Shorty.
It is my understanding that the Shorty attracts more entries than available spots. The organizers have the luxury of being choosy about who they allow in.

Looks like there will be webstreaming from Blaine this weekend. I had heard there is something in the ground under the rink that interferes with the streaming and the sensor handles. Good to see that they got that solved.

Four men's teams earn points this past weekend. Small points based on the size and strength of field. Teams K. Dropkin, Farbelow, Meyers and Maxie all get on the board.
For the women, only team McCormick has hit the board yet with points.
Team E. Brown gets back into the battle this weekend at the KW Fall Classic. Don't see a team list yet for the Point Optical, not sure if any teams are heading there. Updated to add that team Clark will be at Point Optical.

Is there a straightforward way to track this?
By that I mean a way to get the OOM (or whatever it's called this year) but only for American Teams?
I don't care if Shuster is 17th or 31st, I care if he's the #1 American or the #5, ya know?

The USCA keeps and publishes a list on a regular basis on the USA Curling website. Not sure when that will first go out but it is tracked.

Too bad Spatola and Sormunen can't get points after going a combined 9-2 against the men and finishing second and in the semi's.
Why isn't that worth anything?

Point Optical teams and draw are now available. Teams Clark and Plys will be going against a very strong field.
Only women's team I see listed anywhere is team Brown at the KW Classic.
Men's OOM
Shuster 12.5
K. Dropkin 2.75
Farbelow 1.375
Meyers 0.825
Maxie 0.825
all others at 0

shotrockcurling.com keeps an up to date US OOM point standings on the homepage. Also updates links to current events with US teams playing in them (scores, streaming)
