CBC and Pinty masters

Curious here. All week SN provides very good curling coverage from Nova Scotia and have incurred all the expenses of all their required staff including the team of commentators. WHY would our taxpayer supported CBC incur the expense of sending their commenters for TWO games while the other team is there also. This appears to me to be beyond stupid, unless there is more than a political excuse.

All good points - but CBC is short on sports properties and the combination of CBC & Rogers/Sportsnet pays far more for such an event that Rogers on its own.

Too bad Rogers best broadcaster, Kevin Martin is banned (or the equivalent) on CBC but Bruce Rainey is at least equal or slightly better to the moribund Rob Faulds. Jill Officer is a nice add to CBC coverage - I do see the point about duplicate coverage and people's money being spent by CBC to do an event Rogers could have handled on their own.

But dollars dictate - and the folks who run curling are very much attracted to money, not much else! Fresca would tell you much the same - he'd just do it in nicer legalese!

Much Ado About Nothing

Why should taxpayers have to incur the expense of sending a crack team of CBC commenters ( commentators ) to Truro?

The short answer is probably because the CBC signed a contractual agreement with Rogers Communications Inc. covering certain broadcasting rights including curling coverage and at that time possibly agreed to absorb 100% of this specific kind of expense. On the other hand, if you have not read the contract how would you know how much, if any, they agreed to absorb?

In any case, before you and everybody else become totally unglued about the possible staggering cost involved here, let me point out this could amount to at least 0.001% of the CBC's annual budget.

I like CBC - radio far more than TV btw but I believe they become more involved in 2 canadian sports - canadian football league (CFL) and pro curling.

Looks like they really want back into the curling - CBC made curling popular across canada with the first TV broadcasts of Brier games in the 1950s (hi-lites) and then moved onto full game casts in the 1960s, eventually dropping the coverage to eager-beaver TSN in the 1980s but CBC helped shape curling to where it is today - and they really want back in.
Like curling, CBC abandoned pro football as TSN grabbed it in the 1990s - TSN does a good job, they cover every game on their variety of platforms and give a few minutes a week to talking about the league, even in the shadow of the mega-NFL.
CBC always gave curling a big-game feel, much like the early NFL broadcasts I saw in the 1960s. TSN is more like Arena-ball and top-loaded with inferior broadcasters like Rod Black - NOTE: You don't want Rod Black covering curling under any circumstances!

My big criticism of CBC is they abandoned province-wide coverage of municipal elections in both Manitoba and Ontario the last few weeks, leaving coverage to ill-prepared CTV.
CTV actually responded well - and a new star was born in Manitoba in the spectacular Gabrielle "Gabby" Marchand.

But CBC really let the side down by walking away from municipal elections (mayor, councillors, school trustees, etc.)

The arrangement between CBC and Sportsnet is an opportunity for the Grand Slams to get some more exposure, similar to how Hockey Night in Canada is on CBC on Saturday nights as well.

The vast majority of the crew works both events, though CBC does like to use their own commentators (which has a lot of overlap still) for their shows too.

Makes sense from a branding perspective.
