need help, getting my out turn started

Anyone have any suggestions on correcting my out turn delivery which I tend to "get started". I am a lefty but I know lots of righty's have the same problem. I realize it's hard to give advice when you havent seen my delivery but maybe someone has some tips.

When you release the rock, the end of the handle should be pointing back at you and your hand should be vertical in the handshake position.

Generally when a person is dumping it in or getting it started the back of their hand is up and palm is down.

Lots of things are possible. Need more info. An instructor can help. Some questions:

Is your slide foot going toward the broom? Is your stone in front of your slide foot (foot behind rock)? Is your elbow behind your wrist on release? Is the handle putting at the broom when you release?

One common error is to carry the rock outside the slide foot. As a result, you will have a tendency to "hook" the rock on release. Another more subtle error is over-rotating the rock on release. In the flat foot no lift delivery the most common issue is not having foot behind rock.

If you are not sliding at the broom, you might be outside-in, sliding wide and pitching back at the broom. You may need an instructor to help spot the error.

Cheers.

I am told I slide towards the broom. But the rock is outside the slide foot and elbow outside of wrist. I think I over rotate too. I guess I need to work on those issues but it's not so easy when you've been doing it for 20 years.

While watching the pros on TV, I have heard alot about a positive release and notice some of the curlers set the rock or give a slight push (past the 6 o clock) with their thumb or fingers. Could this be used to control getting it started.

As others have said, hard to tell without watching. Have a sweeper look down at your release. Keeping the elbow low is also a help. Your release should be the same speed for a take out as it is for a draw.

In my opinion more shots are lost on release errors than slide errors.

I would think it has to do with having the rock outside of your slide foot. When you release the rock you're naturally going to bring it back towards center. I actually have the opposite problem, where my natural tendency is to pop my out turn. My fix is to keep the rock a little outside of center and then I don't pop it. Not ideal, but it works ok for me.

You can try the positive release, but without a ton of practice you'll be very inconsistent if you try to manipulate the rock as much as the pros do.

Also maybe try lightening up on your grip on the handle. A tight grip will generally cause you to start the rock. I had the same problem with my inturn until my coach told me to lighten up on my grip.
