2016 Viterra Championship

Based on the draw, is this the top half seeding?

1 - Carruthers
2 - McEwen
3 - Lyburn
4 - Peters
5 - Forrest
6 - Dunstone
7 - David Bohn
8 - Kolomaya
9 - Ramsay
10 - Dennis Bohn
11 - McIntyre
12 - Irwin
13 - Loreth (or Oryniak?)
14 - Marnoch
15 - McNamee
16 - Lukowich

BTW - I think this is the year McEwen wins it.

What's the scuttlebutt in Manitoba regarding Dunstone and what his team will do should they actually win the Manitoba Tankard? There is a direct conflict with the junior world championships and the Brier. I can't imagine Curling Canada let the team leave Stratford after winning the Canadian Junior Men's Championship without a 100% commitment to represent Canada at the world's.

Agreed, likely obligated to attend World Juniors as team Canada. Either way the competition is an ideal tune up for the World's that he would not get any other way this time of year with limited spiels.

It's a bit of a sticky wicket. I understand why Dunstone (and perhaps even Curling Canada) would want to play in the Manitoba Tankard - great prep for worlds - but if they committed as the Canada rep to worlds, this should disqualify them for an event that, if they won, would prevent them from fulfilling the obligation of winning that event. All teams that lose to Dunstone could argue that they deserve a shot at winning the event without Dunstone present.

would be pretty interesting . i cant say what id do if i were in that position. you want to rep your country at every opportunity but a chance to play a brier is huge. you never know when your getting back . ..of course you could say that about going to a world championship too

if dunstone wins manitoba and chooses to play the brier then who goes to world juniors? would the tanner horgan rink?. if dunstone wins manitoba and chooses to play the world juniors does the runner up go to the brier?

i dont know..but if i was the team that lost in a provincial final i wouldnt feel all that great about going to the national championship..i wouldnt have earned it.

its possible that , at some point if dunstone gets close to the final they'd tank the game..such as a semifinal to prevent even having to sort it out

Don't use the Province of Record argument either - Mike would have just as much trouble getting out of Alberta (even though they have a slimmer field) than he has wendling his way out of Manitoba. Saskatchewan, OK, that's another matter - you've got Steve Laycock as the top provincial monster and not much other than a bunch of old guys tossing runners up and down the sheet. Before Laycock, Pat Simmons would have tormented Mr. McEwen.

Without Stoughton there's really only a couple teams near Mohawk Mike. Obviously his conqueror from last year (Reid) - perhaps Willy Lyburn and now some superb junior champions transitioning into mens play.

But McEwen probably would have won Saskatchewan the year that Virtue laid his claim to his only Brier appearance. Virtue is not the Brier appearance lock you are inferring and McEwen is not the only perennial provincial contender to have a number of bridesmaid results without being a bride - Merv Mann must have been bridesmaid in Saskatchewan 4 or 5 times without ever winning a provincial title. There are Manitoba examples of that as well.

I think all this talk about Dunstone winning Manitoba and having to choose is a bit premature to say the least.
If it comes to it, for me at least, winning a world junior title sounds a lot more lucrative than going 5-6 at the Brier in Dunstone's case.

The World Junior Champion has a spot in the season ending Champions Cup in Sherwood Park. A 5-6 Brier team does not get an invite....

Minor upset on the first draw with McIntyre (11th seed) losing to Drews. A bit surprising that McEwen had to go 9 ends to beat the 31st seed, but that's just being picky.

I wouldn't call the Bohn match an upset. Looking back through the teams the Richter has been on - including McEwen, Gunner, and others - he has jumped around a lot, could be a negative thing - but this year with Bohn has been his best season. Tyler Forrest also has depth in the province. I think David's team is stronger in some ways.

In that scenario, Baker said Curl Manitoba has decided the loser of the final would have to play the loser of the semifinal in a special tiebreaker game for the Brier berth.

Perfect. If Dunstone wins the final, I hope this happens regardless of respective records. Granted, it's like a second-chance for the team that loses the semi-final, but I think it's only fair overall given the circumstances.

If Dunstone wins 1-1 Page on his way to the Championship, there shouldn't be something like that, because both teams will know that they are the last two standing during the semi-final. And it's not like both teams won't know what this game is about.

^^^ you are correct

Curl Mnaitoba is then saying there will be a double SF match..

If Dunstone is sitting in the final.. the SF should become the final..

McEwen better pick it up if he's going to break his losing streak. Man, he was up 5-4 after 8 ends against Justin Reynolds in his opener, he allowed McNamee to be one down through 7 (then blew it open) and today he's up 4-3 after 9 ends over Bohn without the hammer. That is not the performance of one of the Top 5 rinks in Canada. I'm cheering for Mike but I'm not sure what is going on. A win's a win. But he's going to be playing much, much steeper competition in the final 8.

Maybe they are getting the bad games out early? I think they are gonna ramp things up now that they are in the top eight.

I actually have the opposite reaction here. I think the close game wins early are only going to help Mikey down the line. What advantage is there to blowing out opposition early? Sure didn't work for Carruthers this morning. The sport is just as much mental as physical and the team needs to be in close dog fight battles to stay mentally ready for "steeper competition" in the Final 8 and Final 4. Winning close games gives more confidence than a blow out.
