INN-OFF-FOR-2: I did copy and paste your letter as feedback to Ryan Shields.

I wonder if they ever checked at CFB Shilo (15 minutes for Brandon) to see what they had for barracks?

ML: There is two flights a day to Brandon, unfortunately both comping from Calgary. One at noon and one around midnight.

Didn't know about the 2nd flight. I do believe IN-OFF flew into Winnipeg from the Maritimes and rented a vehicle to make their way to Brandon. (2.5 hour drive if non-stop, ideal conditions) but got ripped by a large drop fee for their rental as they prolly decided to fly to Calgary and then back to the Maritimes.
Perhaps IO2 can inform us what the dog gone drop-off fee amounted to at the Brandon car rental location?

First let me say it was a fantastic week we had in Brandon. The locals made our week the best. Joined us in cheering on our team as MB was the opposite draw.

It was my son's and skip's girlfriends that got jammed on the drop off fee. I don't know the exact amount but I believe they paid close to 120 for 2 days rental and drop fee. Normally 50-60. Then another of our group had a car for them for the week from Winnipeg. We were walking distance so didn't need the car. When we left we took the Brandon-Winnipeg shuttle to the airport.

My wife had to fly westjet and I flew Air Canada both to Winnipeg 8 hours apart due to lack of seats/flights available. We stayed overnight in Winnipeg, only 105 a night, and drove with the girlfriends in the morning to Brandon on Saturday and missed the wildcard game.

I just think with a bit of pre-planning, a lot of this travel schmozzle could have been avoided. It's a national event, add some flights westjet.. Air Canada, put on a couple charters!
About the hotels, I understand make hay while the sun shines, but 50-100% is a bit much.

I've been online and many hotels closest to the arena in Kingston are already blocked for the Brier dates. Won't let you book or even give prices. Here we go again.

ML just read your post about the barracks. Would have been something to look into. I know here it was 12 bucks a night per head. No where near fancy but a bed. How far was the base from the arena?

Maybe Kingston will open up the barracks. It's right across the causeway from the arena.

I wrote the post about the Barracks. CFB Shilo is about 15 minutes from Brandon and bus workers back and forth daily.

Curler 1 answered your question about the barracks. CFB Shilo is only 12 miles or so from Brandon - don't know how many it can accomodate and they'd have to serve notice to the German forces (who train there with canadian forces) to vacate for 10 days.

But a $25 per night fee for bed 'n breakfast, access to the local curling club for special events and socials at night - could be quite the deal, especially if committee can arrange regular shuttles and rideshares back 'n forth.

Germans do not train at CFB Shilo and haven't for years.

When the Germans left, they closed the base in Winnipeg and those soldiers were moved to Shilo.

My husband is a civilian who has worked out there for 37 years (retirement coming soon for fishing season), so I know most everything there is to know out there.

I'm wondering if this something each local organizing committee can look into. Many bases are either in the city or close to the cities that are hosting. If they have the space, they can open up the barracks for the week and use the money made to go towards their forces family funds. Win, win.

Agreed - huge oversight.

Ben said it well:

“You’re watching greatness with him,” said Hebert. “He’s top three. He’s ridiculous. I mean, with what this guy has done with his career, he has one blemish of not winning the Olympic Games. Well, he won the Olympic trials, the hardest event to win. He’s won four Briers with four different teams, so who is the common denominator there? You guys can figure that out. But he’s amazing, I love curling with him.”

Benny said it BEST -

Kevin Koe is a freak . . .

put him in a one on one shooting competition - all kinds of shots:

1. Draws
2. Guards
3. Runbacks
4. Heavy Hit 'n rolls
6. Short doubles
7. Cross-house doubles
8. Slashes w/ less than 20% of a rock showing
9. Freezes
10. Double avoidance

Put the following guys in their prime in the competition:
Duguid, Stoughton, Ferbey, Hackner, Folk, Ryan, K-Mart, Howard, Howard G, Gushue, etc.

Koe would prolly win 6 or 7 of the above categories, finish top 2 or 3 in the others.

No one can match his level of consistency across all shot platforms.

Whats really dangerous is that he never considered himself a strategic genius - like K-Mart or Goo. . . . but with his successes he's become super capable from a strategic point of view. His trump card is very few mistakes - or sloppy rock-positioning (a la Jennifer Jones) which seldom creates opportunities for opponents.
