Much as I don't have a lot of respect for curl Canada it would be up to the provinces to enforce residency. Entries go to the province, entry fees to the provinces and playdowns are run by the provinces. Curl Canada would have to grow massively to run all provincial playdowns.

There have been so many abusers over the years it's not funny. Biggest is Johnny Mo in BC for years well before the 1 import. These teams have the BIG sponsors so 4k is a drop in the bucket. Make it hurt if they cheat. Fine them. Shame them . All this talk lately about sportsmanship and integrity of the game....what a joke. It's easy to enforce. Where do they declare their taxes. You can have a fake address and fake part tine job but what province are your taxes declared for your real job. EG fire fighter in Canmore AB not fishing guide for one weekend in BC. Again that only works if you work, If you're a professional curler for hire it's a bit harder Same goes for Homan and Courtney in AB curling for Ontario. Courtney "moved" for the first year but they both RESIDE in AB now. Somebody at Curling Canada grow a backbone and enforce what you've legislated instead of turning the blind eye.
Again sorry for the rant of day.
Totally appreciate your points and understand your frustration but Alex-in the post previous to this one-is correct. The onus on enforcement has to be at the provincial level. In the example you cite, that means Curl BC or, more specifically, the chief exec Scott Braley who made the decision to allow the application made by Morris.
The CCA was pretty much hamstrung here. Curl BC didn't do their job and protect dues paying, BC residents so thats why we now have the one import rule.
Can't turn the clock back, nor can we completely stop it. But we can make them pay and it might stop some while adding $ to Jr. Programs.

Not a big surprise, but Pat Simmons is going to be stepping away from the game. So will Colton Lott, his talented third from this year's team. Kyle Doering and Rob Gordon will continue playing.

According to a FB post, Manitoba Legend favourite Sherri Middaugh is stepping away from the game. Lee Merklinger may be a free agent, Joanne Rizzo and Leigh Armstrong could be putting a team together.

I really like Sherri - great curler, great career. Never had a super-team to showcase her skills (a la Jones, Jones, Homan, even Kelly Scott)
Her dedication to her sport will not be forgotten . . .
I think Rizzo probably forms her own team to also-ran in Ontario. Merklinger and the other gal might be good pickups for wandering skips like Flaxey, Tippin, Duncan.

New Team Flaxey
From the didn't see this coming file,
"Finally! The moment you have been waiting for! Meet the new Team Flaxey:
Alli Flaxey, Kate Cameron, Taylor McDonald, Raunora Westcott & Coach Caleb Flaxey
After each having successful seasons, we have joined forces to play out of The Granite Curling Club in Winnipeg, MB."
Interesting since there are two out of towners on this Winnipeg based team.

Well, that leaves Chelsey in decision mode. Laine and Cathy0 are strong veterans. An other quadrenniel though? Mebbeenot. So, Who is a good fit for Chelsey. I mean, a GOOD FIT, not an opportune fit. Come home to Manitoba. I think your curling mates are here.

Unless there are serious moves planned, this Team Jones announcement and the prior post indicating a new lineup for Flaxey really slams the door on anyone believing residency will be enforced.

Of course, what else would they say. We've seen this "I'm moving" story so often in the past and it's laughable to the point that it's not even believable anymore.

Good luck to Flaxey if she wants to get out of Manitoba. While she has a good vice, it will be tough with all of the good teams playing out of that Province now.

Well, Allison is a Winnipegger - so no surprise that she'd be back. Fun Fact from 2001 CdnJuniors Composition of Team Manitoba: 3 Manitoba (Nimik) MAN Victoria C.C. Winnipeg
Player no. 1 - Elisabeth Peters normally throws lead rocks. (aka Frye)
Player no. 2 - Lindsay Titheridge normally throws second rocks.
Player no. 3 - Kristin Loder normally throws third rocks.
Player no. 4 - Allison Nimik normally throws last rocks. (aka Flaxey)

Jill Officer - WHAT A CAREER!
Jill Officer has had an amazing career. She's been the one constant in Jennifer Jones' revolving door Manitoba super-teams over the last 15 years.
SCOTTIES - 6 GOLD, 3 silver, 3 bronze.
WORLDS - 1 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze (possibly more to come)
OLYMPICS - GOLD - UNBEATEN
CASH - prolly #1 womens team in cash earnings
Has been confronted by all comers and risen to the challenge. Would have loved to see Jones vs. Schmirler with both squads in their prime. Alas, can't happen!
Good luck to Jill. She was more than just a curler. Amazing spokesman for the game, up 'n coming womens curlers, mom, daughter, JJ's chief lieutenant.
Will post a separate thread about the greatest female seconds in curling - no question Officer Jill is at or right near the top!

Joss Peterman
What a coup for Team Jones. Getting the services of one of the elite 2nds in curling.
Officer would be 43/44 next curling season - she's going out on top, no question. This year, in particular Jill has been as solid as she's ever been.
Peterman was seen in alberta circles as the next super-skip-in training but her team split so she was available - and Jones found her.
Obviously Jones wants to compete hard in next year's STOH - and break the record she co-owns with Coco Jones. Peterman gives her that chance.
No woman in Canada is as strong or tough than Joanne Courtney - and Homan will be Jones major challenge - even with Rachel suffering a nervous meltdown at the Olympics. I expect her back, meaner than ever, same team, too! Don't believe any of Team Homan will leave - where would they curl at such high levels?
Officer was the closest to Courtney in sheer strength and power but Jill is mid 40s, Courtney is not yet 30.
Now Jones has a bit of a youth brigade in 29 yr old Kaitlyn Lawes and 27 yr old Peterman, along with perennial all-star Dawn McEwen (35).
Joss will have to adjust to Jones - she doesn't have the same delivery/release as Officer. She can be very perplexed on-ice as her performance at the mixed doubles Olympic trials showed. NEVERTHELESS - she's a great curler. Nowhere near the sheer brute strength of Officer or Courtney but far more nuanced, still capable of fairly big weight and a good to excellent judge of line and weight.
GRAND FORTUNE FOR TEAM JONES . . . . !!!

I don't think residency will be an issue for Jones as they are Team Canada. Not sure about Homan though as not sure how long she can use student status to remain an Ontario resident. No problem with Flaxey team if 2nd moves and she says she is. Same as Ryan Fry moving to different provinces. They were legit moves. Problems are with phoney moves like Morris who didn't move to BC at a time when there wasn't the one non resident exemption.

Sherry Middaugh contributed a lot to curling in Ontario, She attended local cashspiels regularly in the lean years before the WCT even hit the curling world. Her team always supported the local host committee by staying for a meal/drink while many teams hightailed it out of club as soon as possible,
All the best to a classy woman.

Agreed and Sherri was always willing to promote local curling events. Hopefully we will see her curling here and there.

She says she's "stepping back" and will be the 5th. She did NOT say she was retiring. I do hope for Peterman's sake she hasn't signed on only to be given the boot 2 years from now for the next Olympic run. She could have made up her own team for the 4 year run instead if that's the case.
