Preference: Sweeper v Shooter

Quick poll. You're going to add a 2nd and your choices are:

1. A top-class sweeper, but poor shooter
2. A top-class shooter, but a poor sweeper

Which do you choose?

Shooting > Sweeping

Pick the shooter. They'll make the shots that make the next shots easier anyway, so you won't need the sweeping as much?

You aren't referring to any of the top women's teams by chance? I'm still inclined to give them time.

I don't want this to be a discussion of current teams.

Just reply with your preference and why.

I lean shooter over sweeper but I know a good sweeper can make a world of difference.

We used to teach new curlers that wanted to quickly improve to focus on their sweeping. Throw 2, sweep 6.

A little bit of a Hobson's Choice here: would you rather have a poor curler or a poor curler? NEITHER poor shooters nor poor sweepers will cut it on the front end if you want to be competitive.

Having said that, sweeping skills should not be underestimated: sweepers make the shot, and precisely control rock placement that is critical for setting up maximum scoring opportunities. Whether you are in a local league team or a competitive unit, having good sweepers (i.e., strength and judgment) is essential for a winning team. To put it concretely for one example, great sweepers with good judgment will increase weight tolerance (over ineffective or clueless sweepers) for a draw to the button from +1 to -1 feet to +1 to -10 feet or more. This has to be a decisive advantage.

When push comes to shove, on a local league or bonspiel team, I'll take an outstanding sweeper who is a so-so shooter at lead or 2nd over an above-average shooter who tickles the ice and doesn't know the difference between top four 1/4 open and back four buried. You won't make many of those hack-weight come-around tap-backs with an inside roll if you have to throw the shot without good sweepers.

YMMV.

Cheers.
