U-18

So here is some exciting news. MOPAC just selected their U-18 boys and girls reps to the U-18 national championships in Milwaukee.

This marks the first MOPAC girls entry into a national championship ever, and the first MOPAC boys entry since Team Utah (Taggert) since 2006.

There is a spot for every region

Get your teams together. U-18 is going to be epic!

The MoPac U-18 players are super-excited that USA Curling added this new championship. Both teams are looking forward to traveling to Wisconsin to play in the event, and they are holding some curling-related fundraisers to help with the travel costs.

The MoPac boys team includes players from both San Francisco and Portland which will be an extra challenge and extra fun.

Bruce Irvin.

It's good to hear that the USCA has brought in a U-18 championship and are inviting reps from all parts of the US.

I know a lot of the US teams were disappointed when the Optimist U18 event shut down and the new Canadian U-18 championships took its place, as it left them nowhere to go. Hopefully these events will lead to a world championship event as well in the near future...

MN2-Thompson
MOPAC-Morley
WA-Violette
WI-Elwing

Pool B
GLCA1-McDonald
GLCA3-Roehl
GNCC1-Sinnett
MN1-Fenson
ND-Lies
WI2-Randall

Women:
Pool A
GLCA1-Willertz
GNCC1-Cousins

ND2-Martin
WI1-McDonald

Pool B
GLCA2-Blaske
GNCC2-Rodgers
MN-Flannery
ND-Kitchens

Some recognizable names, some new ones. Should be a good week. There are 5 GLCA teams, 3 men's 2 women's, which is very exciting for a region which up until 5 or so years ago had very few if any junior teams play down each year.

The GLCA has had one curling club with a real strong junior program in the past 5-10 years (3/5 of the GLCA U18 teams in this event are from one club). I think some other GLCA clubs are starting to pick up a bit more. Their proximity to Canada has allowed the juniors to do some Junior/U18 spiels there and they have done well. They may not have known last names, but they can play well. Should be a good event.

I might have to assume most people outside of Wisconsin may have been surprised by the Boys winners at the U-18 at the Milwaukee Curling Club. It was an extremely tough field with 1/2 of the Junior World silver medalists coming out of Washington, the Sinnet/Clawson team from the east and Riley Fenson from Minnesota all making the final four.

As Cheeseheads we have been watching the name Hipke and Marquardt for years in Juniors and Men's curling and now the next generation is stepping up. Add the Elwing brothers who are fantastic athletes outside of curling as well and you have a team that proved it could stand up to the best the field had to offer.

All of the teams that participate show that we have some strong curlers heading to Juniors and hopefully this event and the qualifiers will continue to grow.
