20,000 curlers

USA Curling announced today that USA recently reached 20,000 registered curlers. (click here to see blog post about it)

Anybody know what the numbers are for other countries around the globe?

An estimate of the population of curlers in Scotland is roughly 20K (http://behindtheglasscurling.blogsp...numbers-of.html)...but that's a very rough estimate.

Is that number for Canada accurate? I had always heard it quoted around 2 million... has there been that much decline in the last 10 or so years?

the Canadian 710,000 estimate comes from a Print Measurement Bureau survey done in 2014. See results here: http://www.curling.ca/about-the-spo...anadian-curler/

It appears to include anybody who set foot on a curling rink which means that it includes visitors to open houses, learn-to-curls, corporate events, private parties, school outings, etc.

the survey also includes a number for “Heavy” Curlers (284,000) who curled ten or more times (the category might also refer to my typical attempt at guard weight). It also breaks out “Medium” Curlers (126,000), people who curled three to nine times in 2014.

So probably a better estimate for # of curlers in Canada is 300K or 400K, depending on how you want to count the Mediums. I have never seen a figure for CurlingCanada-affiliated, dues-paying club membership for Canada.

The numbers quoted in Canada are 1 million curlers, but I believe that number will be something along the lines of the number of people who have been on the ice in the last 5 years in some format.

If you take a estimation of the number of regular players, you can get an idea of the numbers.

Approximately 1100-1200 curling clubs registered in Canada. If we estimate an average of 100-200 members per club, you get between 110,000-240,000 regular club members.

Lots of other people touch the game in a year through corporate outings, rentals, weekend funspiels and just wanting to try out the game and this adds up to the numbers we see quoted in Canada.

I'd be curious to see any kind of numbers for how many people have been exposed to the game in the US...not seeing it, but actually getting out on the ice whether via learn-to-curl, open-house, corporate event, etc.

Come to think of it, keeping such statistics could be beneficial, especially at a club level. If the ratio of first-time curlers to new members is good, it means that people are doing something right. If not, it might be time to reevaluate how you conduct your events or what you could do differently. On a broader scale, it could help the USCA to evaluate its programs and see what is working and what isn't.

Does anyone (from the US) on here have any figures from their club? Are such numbers looked at? I know at our club we usually have a rough idea, but I haven't seen any concrete data being kept.

Just wondering.

Numbers from last year's 2013-2014 USCA Membership Report (available on USA Curling web site)

Category Total
Adult (age 22-54) 13959 (79.2%)
Senior (age 55+) 1725 (9.8%)
Junior (age 14-21) 785 (4.5%)
Youth (age 13-) 427 (2.4%)
Social 432 (2.5%)
Other 297 (1.7%)

TOTALS 17625

So to get to 20,000 registered members, there were 2,375 new members this past year, a 13.5% gain! Very impressive!

Other countries:

Switzerland Approx 8,000 registered curlers
Japan Approx 2,500 registered curlers

We track attendance at Open Houses and rentals/group events at our club. We had just about 1,000 guests for our Open Houses this year. That number is down a little bit from last year, but only because we had 3-4 extra sessions around the Olympics. I won't know what the numbers were for rentals/group events this year until our annual general meeting next month, but they were right around 4,600 participants last year.

If we could staff them and didn't have to schedule around bonspiels and playdowns, we could probably have an Open House every weekend from January through March and fill most of them.

Good deal.

We're an arena club, playing on sand-floor zamboni ice at 10:00 on Thursdays, and yet attendance at our learn-to-curl events has been outstanding all year. We just had a free open house that was well attended, and a handful of corporate groups (one was 40+)...better times for those though.

Typically we'll have some type of league play on the 2-3 middle sheets, and a learn-to-curl on one or both of the outside sheets...usually anywhere from 8 to as many as 20+ people.

My point is that with make-do ice conditions and a less-than-ideal time interest is still high even a year after the Olympics. There are three other clubs in the Chicagoland area...two within about 30-45 minutes of the city proper, and one about 90 minutes out. They have even better numbers, and as far as I know the two closer to the city are at or close to capacity member-wise.

Here's some numbers from Granite Curling in Seattle. We do both Open House and Rentals/Outreach throughout the year. The Outreach/Rentals are usually to local businesses and corporations for morale events.

Open Houses 2014:
13 Open Houses
1816 Guests/Participants
~$37,000 revenue

Open Houses 2013:
9 Open Houses
886 Guests/Participants
~$14,000 revenue

Outreach 2014
196 events
4605 Guests/Participants
~$138,000 revenue

Outreach 2013
123 events
3124 Guests/Participants
~$91,000 revenue

In general, we do the Open Houses early in the year to attract regular season members (season runs from October to March) and then drive the participants from the later Open Houses to the Spring League. For the 2012-2013 season, we had 73 first year novices, 40 second year novices and 40 Spring League members. For the 2013-2014 season, we had 40 first year novices and 24 second year novices. 2014 being an Olympic year, we had 108 new Spring League members.

So yeah, outreach and open houses are important, since they help us bring in new members and keep the blood line young. But we're almost at capacity for some leagues, so that tempers our ability to take full advantage of those guests who flow through the club. But 10 years ago, we didn't have a capacity problem with 300 members and it's a good problem to have.

Hope that helps.

It does, thanks!

Glad to hear things are going well, good problem to have indeed. I hear similar things from lots of clubs around the country.

Having curled over there during the past two years for Highland Week, "clubs" are generally small, between 10 and 40 people, and you'll often find multiple clubs curling at the same facility (Inverness Ice Center hosts 3 or 4 if memory serves me right). Typically with this overlap the clubs will have their own leagues (often with multiple clubs on ice at the same time) and run one or more "superleagues" which consist of team members from multiple clubs and have their own championships. Fees are paid weekly at about £10 per week or so.

Provinces and areas are analagous to Canadian regions and provinces, respectively, in terms of playdowns, just smaller in terms of population and geographic size

12,749 curlers, 631 clubs in Scotland, that is 20 people per club. Not even enough to have 3 games going at once
